Did anybody got a stamp at the Toronto airport before a flight connection to the US?

I might fly from Italy to Toronto and then to Detroit. Do I go through US customs in Toronto?

Yes you will clear US customs and immigration in Toronto....

YMMV

However, the US-Destinations PFI's at Canadian airports (including Toronto's hell-gate Pearson) do not issue the 90-day temp EAD; the only airport POE that issues it is JFK.

(plus, you also have to clear Canadian customs/immigration before you can proceed to the PFI; it's not auto-transfer of luggage).

Another option, raffy is to fly to Toronto and connect to WINDSOR, asking your yank SO to pick you up from there (no saving on Canadian customs--just "nothing to lose"). As Toronto-Windsor is Domestic, there is less charge for the flight than for one to Detroit. Not sure whether you can get the stamp at one of Detroit's two LAND POE's.

Windsor is not a major airport so flights between Toronto and Windsor tend to be very pricey. If your fiance is not against driving he could always pick you up at the Toronto airport and save you that hassle, then do the land crossing between Windsor/Detroit. It would be a bit of a drive but certainly do-able. I guess it depends on where in Michigan you are ultimately headed - Detroit office covers a fair bit of territory. If you are able to do a direct flight to Detroit instead of going through Toronto you would probably save yourself a fair bit of hassle and time, especially if your major concern is getting the Employment stamp on your passport - I don't believe either border crossing does that.

Just a quick check on Toronto to Windsor flights - you can't get there from Pearson International Airport - you have to go to the Toronto Airport - and a one way trip costs around $470.(Air Canada)

Um, I think Toronto Airport IS Pearson (YYZ) Kathryn (and I just did the check on Air Canada's site).

Another way (probably best) would be to actually book to JFK and then JFK-DTW (with NO pass-through of Canada).

There are 3 airports in Toronto. Pearson International is where a flight from Italy would arrive. There are no flights that originate in Pearson that end in Windsor that I could locate. To get a flight to Windsor you need to travel to one of Toronto's other 2 domestic airports - a real hassle. There are flights from Pearson to Detroit - just not to Windsor. I didn't just check Air Canada's site - I checked with Travelocity for ALL flights using the specific airport codes. I used to live 45 miinutes from Windsor and my boss travelled regularly to Toronto and Ottawa - it was actually easier for him to drive to London and catch the flight from there than from Windsor even though it was a farther drive.

If the OP is looking for the work authorization I agree, it would be better to land at JFK and bypass Canada.,

YYZ - Pearson International

YTO - Toronto Airport

YTZ - Toronto City Centre Airport

YQG - Windsor

BTW, I also got a LOWER fare possible (AC Tango) than the one you quoted--$204 COMPLETE cost.

Also, YYZ-YQG was the exact route used for two trips I did make that way (Nov 2000 and May 2002).

IMO, "YTO" is probably a "filler code", like "LON" for London (its actual airport codes are LHR and LGW).

I used to live 45 miinutes from Windsor and my boss travelled regularly to Toronto and Ottawa - it was actually easier for him to drive to London and catch the flight from there than from Windsor even though it was a farther drive.

Probably several factors in this:

  1. the ONLY nonstop destination from Windsor is Toronto, as opposed to maybe other destinations possible from Windsor
  2. limited overall flight timings from Windsor--of which even fewer connect reasonably to ongoing

If the OP is looking for the work authorization I agree, it would be better to land at JFK and bypass Canada.,

Also, to add. There aren't too many circumstances where I would advise travelling THROUGH Canada to go to US (or vice-versa) as you always have to clear the customs/immigration of the wrong (one you're not going to stay in) country. The exception would be for citizens of VWP countries (which also generally don't need visas to enter Canada) who are going to enter US on K-1, but would like to see Canada without waiting for AP--in this case, they can actually do so BEFORE entering US.
