Tadaaaa new episode!

I got the translated documents, went to the BMV, passed easily the driving test.

But, of course, there is a but...

When I sat back inside the BMV to finalize my license, the lady asked for an ID.

I handed her my passport, she looked at it and said it was not possible/useful to issue a license for now.

Why? Because my I-94 expires on November 29th.

And since I have not launched my AOS (will be done this week), they don't want to issue a license that will be expired by November 29th...

I think that's the hardest process I have been for.

Even getting a gun permit is way easier here.

No unfortunately you will not get a gun permit either....lol

Thats the new process most states have adopted and its little annoying for perm resident too but now they only issue anyone a DL only until the day I-94 is valid or visa is valid or in case of perm resident only until the card is valid.

Since you entered on K1 - you can get first lic until your I-94 is valid and than once you have your Conditional GC you can have another DL until 2 years and than apply for another DL when you are ready to remove condition and it takes 8-6 months so u get extension on your conditional GC so you can get another DL for year.

After all this once you get your 10 yr GC you can get the normal DL which will expire in 6 yrs.

But his I-94 is not expired yet...

I'm a conditional resident, and the DMV in CA gave me a DL valid until 2016. I was expecting one valid until the expiration date of my GC though.

You got it by accident, you should have only got it for 2 years until your conditional GC is valid.

OP's I-94 was only valid for few days, I have not seen it written but I believe when your status is valid for less than 6 weeks they do not issue DL as they assume it takes 3-4 weeks to get the lic.

These are the state laws and vary from state to state, not all the DMV employees are completely aware of all the regulation.

For brief amount of time even I had got a DL for 6 yrs and they called me back and fixed their error.

For written test, no issues. I took it and passed.

But when I came to the BMV branch for the driving test, the examiner looked at my French license and said he wanted a translation to understand what was written... :bonk:

Really? 2 categories of vehicles... I told him what exactly was written inside, but he didn't change his mind.

Oh well, I got my license translated, I go today to book a slot for next week.

I would just tell him I don't have one and never had - like lots of people applying for drivers licenses...

Speaking of that, the I-94 is expiring November 29th, but on the K-1 Visa, the expiration date is February 2013.

Which one is making sense then? For the DL of course.

Not trying to be smarter than anybody, that's out of curiosity.

The expiration date of your K-1 is irrelevant. Your K-1 visa expired the day you used it (it's a single-entry visa).

What matter is the expiration date of your I-94, which should be 90 days after POE. And that's the one important for your DL.

Makes sense.

Oh well, I'll just wait for my NOA to arrive and go back to BMV.
