American Family Association Leader: Jesus Wants Women Out of the Political Arena

Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association (AFA) stated on his radio show yesterday that political leadership should be in the hands of men and if people angrily disagree with his assertion then that proves that they don't have a well-reasoned argument.

The basis for his stance is Paul's letter to the women of Ephesus in 1 Timothy 2:11-12 which states, "Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, not Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression." This well-researched article fromChristian Feminism explains how the mistranslation of the words "Hesuchios/Hesuchia" and "Authentein" changes the entire meaning of these verses and also demonstrates that Paul referenced the Creation story in order to reprimand only the women of Ephesus for following false teaching, not every woman in the world. Paul's friendship with Priscilla also bolsters this interpretation because she was recognized as an authority on Jesus and preached his gospel throughout her life and there is no indication that Paul had any problem with this.
