What's the big deal about child labor?

Why is it ok for adults to work but not for children -- assuming they work

reasonable hours and get paid for their work?

(Seriously, I'm not taking the piss, I really want to know.)

Why, isn't it obvious?

We redistribute all the wealth on a communist model until we achieve utopia, then we can all worship the sun and sing happy clappy songs until the cows come home.

Translation -- "achieve equalisation by making rich poor and poor poorer". No thank you.

“Forced labour” in this context, usually amounts to slavery.

I think the word "usually" can safely be deleted here.

Aren't children basically "slaves" of their parents anyway?

They pretty much have to do whatever their parents tell them, no?

Aren't we all slaves then, or would you do your job anyways, if there was no pay involved?

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

One huge difference, Lisa.

We actually have the freedom to QUIT (admittedly, this oft means complete loss of income) if we hate our jobs that much--the children here don't.

True, dean (as in US, lawyers can oft be found who will take their case).

For Mark: when was the last time you saw parents specifically ask a child to do an extremely dangerous task specifically due to their size (context: piecing in garment factories, making match heads)?

You can make them do stuff. You can't abuse them, physically or mentally, but

everything else is fair game.

You're introducing additional factors here: danger.

If the work they do is not dangerous, is it ok then?

Really? If quitting meant no food, would you really see a choice?
