PRINCETON, NJ -- The inaugural results of a new Gallup question -- posed to more than 120,000 U.S. adults thus far -- shows that 3.4% say "yes" when asked if they identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

These results are based on responses to the question, "Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender?" included in 121,290 Gallup Daily tracking interviews conducted between June 1 and Sept. 30, 2012. This is the largest single study of the distribution of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population in the U.S. on record.

...

Overall, the results from this analysis run counter to some media stereotypes that portray the LGBT community as predominantly white, highly educated, and very wealthy.

Nonwhites are more likely than white segments of the U.S. population to identify as LGBT. The survey results show that 4.6% of African-Americans identify as LGBT, along with 4.0% of Hispanics and 4.3% of Asians. The disproportionately higher representation of LGBT status among nonwhite population segments corresponds to the slightly below-average 3.2% of white Americans who identified as LGBT.

...

Adults aged 18 to 29 (6.4%) are more than three times as likely as seniors aged 65 and older (1.9%) to identify as LGBT. Among those aged 30 to 64, LGBT identity declines with age -- at 3.2% for 30- to 49-year-olds and 2.6% for 50- to 64-year-olds.

Consistent with other recent studies and with the gender gap identified earlier in this report, younger women are more likely to identify as LGBT than are younger men. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, 8.3% of women identify as LGBT, compared with 4.6% of men the same age.

The rest of the women are in denial, even the self-professed lesbians. I have a lot of lesbian clients, and have been asked to join then for some "playtime" after I finished working for them, on several occasions. Seems they like anybody that is good with tools.

Young gay/bisexual men will be the recipients of more disapproval (and repercussions) from society than lesbians and especially bisexual women. It is not surprising they take more time to sort those feelings out or openly admit them. I would also say that there have been a number of women that have gone through abusive relationships and have "sworn off men" that may answer that question differently at that point in their lives.

I would be interested to see the numbers in a study that asks "Have you ever had an intimate encounter with someone of the same sex", "More than once?", "More than five times?". I would put some money down we would see a number higher that 30%

Wow that is even smaller than I had speculated.

This is a great example of how a well organized group, even at a small fraction of the whole can effect change.

6% of adults aged 18-29 are LGBT, so expect that 3% number to go up as the 18-29 cohort ages..

And as they age an even higher number of the following youth will "discover" they are gay too.

I think of a lot of young girls now practice some form of homosexuality because it's considered cool and trendy. I have known a couple of women who would do it because their boyfriends or Husbands loved it. which we did.

No before everyone blows a gasket, I saying that is a very distinct group and different than your average genetically predisposition lesbians. That is why that group is higher. I think among young males there is still more stigma attached to it among peers.

Young gay/bisexual men will be the recipients of more disapproval (and repercussions) from society than lesbians and especially bisexual women. I saw this after I posted. I think we said the same thing, yours just sounded more clinical and less man pigish.

I doubt that anyone would swing the other way just because its cool and trendy. Somehow I find it hard to image anyone doing something that is not in their nature to do so.

Small titties are nice too. I actually hate the really big ones, the ones that leave you gasping for air.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
