NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- First-time claims for unemployment benefits are on a roller coaster. The number snapped back up last week, after falling to a four-year low the week before.

About 388,000 people filed for first-time unemployment benefits in the week ended October 13, up 46,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Obama's economy

A look at where the economy stood when Obama took office and what's changed since.

View photosThe last two weeks have swung dramatically in both directions, with initial claims first dropping to a revised 342,000, the lowest level in four years, and then suddenly popping back up last week.

The large swings illustrate just how volatile the data are from week to week, which is why economists often prefer to look at a four-week moving average.

That indicator increased to 365,500 last week and has been hovering in the 360,000 to 380,000 range since July.

Meanwhile, about 3.3 million Americans continued to file for their second week of unemployment benefits in the week ended October 6, the most recent data available.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

Looks like they over adjusted last weeks figures. I am not a conspiracy kind of guy, but something looks fishy

:40AM EDT October 18. 2012 - NEW YORK -- Stocks slipped Thursday as companies including Verizon, Morgan Stanley and Southwest Airlines posted mixed quarterly earnings, and the Labor Department posted the latest numbers on unemployment benefits. The Labor Department reported that applications for U.S. unemployment benefits jumped 46,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 388,000, the highest in four months. That's way up from last week, however, big shifts for both weeks were heavily influenced by technical factors.

The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose slightly to 365,500, suggesting that job creation remains weak.

I watch these numbers weekly. There is always fluctuation, but 40,000 is pretty big. Most of the time its in the 10-15,000 range. I think for the past 4 years the models by which they "adjust" the total figure have been inaccurate from Oct 1st thru Jan 1.

It seems that California cooked the books last week.

Though, Romney did claim at the debate that government DOESN'T create jobs... so now I'm confused as to whose fault this is.

His point was that Business creates jobs and we need government policies that are business friendly that makes business grow. It's kind of like saying a farmer can't produce an apple. A farmer can plant, nurture, water and fertilize a tree that can produce an apple.
