SSN - how long to wait

Hi All

We arrived in Seattle last Saturday and are settling in nicely. I was told at POE that I should go into the SS office in the next few days to apply for a SSN. I did tick the box on the ds230 form but because I changed my address at the Poe, I thought it might be a different process. I went into the SSA office and they told me to wait for 21 days (business days) and then come back in if I haven't recieved it. Is that normal? Right? Should I wait or call someone? If so. Who?

Also, the officer changed my address at Poe, but do I need to call and confirm that with USCIS that my address has changed? If so, how do I do that?

Any advice/help/experience would be appreciated.

I'd like t know the answer to that question as well! My husband will be here next week and we were planning on going to the SS office to get his SSN right away since he may have a job lined up and will need his SSN to get started (it'll help to have it anyway).

I've heard from others that you can go to the SS office and get your card and number but now I'm confused since you were told to wait 21 business days. Hopefully someone comes back with some helpful info. Good luck!

In regards to the change of address, I had the same issue altho I am a K1. I had asked the officer at POE but he said he couldn't change it. You have 10 days to notify USCIS about the change of your address here in the USA: download the AR-11 and send it off to the address they mention on it at the bottom. Make sure you have a receipt that it has been sent for future reference. Even if the officer you had had changed it, just to be sure you could send the AR-11 so that you done your bit or alternatively I would call USCIS in a few days.

I entered the Peace Arch crossing in Blaine, WA on a CR1 visa and within 2 weeks I had my SSN card via mail.

I never went into the SSA office.

I have read many posts that say to wait 4 weeks before applying for your SS card, I don't know where that came from. My story: wife arrived on K-1 9/2/12, went SS office 9/4/12 with passport and I-94 and applied, received SSN card on 9/10/12 in the mail.
