I got my EAD card yesterday so my husband and I went to SSA today to apply for social security card. After waiting for about 10 minutes, the field officer said that they need to send my documents to New York to verify it and it will take 3-4 weeks. I don't know what really happened. She just handed to a letter and this is what it says:

Dear *********

This is to acknowledge that you applied for Social Security number on Oct 16, 2012.

Before we can issue you a Social Security number card, we must verify the document(s) you gave to us to show your Alien Status with the Federal State, or local office in the United State that issued the document(s). This may take up to 4 weeks.

If that office verifies the authenticity of your document(s) we will mail you a Social Security number card. If that office does not verify your document(s)' you are not eligible for a Social Security number card and we will inform you of this in writing.

If you are not a U.S. citizen and you are applying for a Social Security number card for employment purposes and your immigration status allows you to work, you may legally begin employment while you await issuance of Social Security card. You cannot work if your immigration status does not authorize you to do so.

FIELD OFFICE MANAGER

Anyone here who have the same thing like me?

It said here I can apply for work but friend of mine told me that company usually asks for ssn. So I'm confused whether if I can apply or not.

Hoping you can enlighten me about this. Thanks in advance!

This is normal. Your EAD status is not on their system yet (updates are very slow!!) so they need to verify it. It takes a few weeks.

You can start applying for jobs.
