The Mercer University community is buzzing after fliers calling for White History months appeared in residence halls on Monday.

The fliers designate November and December for the occasion, according to photos posted on Facebook and Twitter.

“It is just as fair to have White History Month/s as it is to have Black History Month/s. How much will you bet that there will be controversy over this?” the fliers read.

President Bill Underwood received e-mails from concerned students, and Underwood addressed the issue in a message to students and faculty Tuesday morning.

At this point, university officials haven’t figured out who posted the fliers but are focused on moving on from the matter, said university Chief of Staff Larry Brumley.

“The focus right now is to remind the university community what we’re about, to remind the university community to have ... discourse on issues like this,” he said. “There are ways to have intelligent discussion on issues of race, and posting anonymous fliers is not the way to do that.”

Students planned to rally around a statue of university founder Jesse Mercer about the issue Tuesday night.

Nicole Esuola, a freshman from Bowie, Md., said some students have been hurt by the fliers. However, as long as the fliers aren’t affecting anyone in a violent way, “everyone has their own opinion,” she said.

Alesa Webber, a senior from Snellville, said she isn’t surprised to see the fliers’ message on campus, a topic that has generated discussion among her friends on Facebook.

“I think those people are everywhere,” she said.

And along the same lines. When are the politicians going to talk about men's issues? They never stop debating women's issues.

Why did the NFL all wear pink for breast cancer awareness on Sunday but you never hear of anyone making a big fuss to highlight prostate cancer or any other kind of cancer for that matter. We need a white male awareness month!
