Hi, myself and boyfriend are looking at moving to america next year. We have friends in america we would be living with to begin with. We both do not currently have jobs lined up in america but would like to eventually live and work over there for a couple of years to see how it goes.

Would someone be able to explain to me what the green card is and if it is the best type of visa for us??

Many thanks

Green card is the permission given by the DHS to reside and work in US.

It is not as simple as you just moving to US with your BF and start looking for work and see how it goes.

If you want to work in US you need a US employer who would sponsor your visa application and would file a visa application for you.

Kate, A 'green card' is a document which allows foreigners to live and work in the United States. It is actually a DL sized card and after a long time it is back to being green again.

A gree card holder is, therefore, an immigrant in the USA, with the rights and obligations that residence in America require.

The ways by which one can obtain a green card - or a temporary work permit for that matter - depend on individual circumstance.

If you want to do some research as to how you might be able to immigrate to the US, check out the USCIS portal at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis

where you can find out the answers to a lot of questions you may have, and that may give you an idea of the processes involved.

Once you have a path, people in this site can help you navigate through the bureaucracy more easily and more often than not, without having to pay legal fees to solicitors and the likes.

Good luck!
