I don't know whether to chastise the writer or the editor, but I'm glad the photo made it clear that it was the busses, not the passengers, that were set on fire.

Probably wouldn't do much good, as your letter would only be binned. Many papers don't even accept corrections for obvious mistakes even when the letter writer has proof (I had such an experience writing a letter to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1995).

Youths arrested over Marseille bus attack

MARSEILLE (Reuters) - French police arrested five youths on Tuesday over a bus arson attack that maimed a student and President Jacques Chirac backed the tough stance on security taken by Interior Minister Nicholas Sarkozy.

Authorities arrested the suspects, all minors, in dawn raids in the southern port city of Marseille where a young woman remained critically ill after suffering 60 percent burns in Saturday's attack, a police source said.

Around 50 officers took part and searched several flats in the Oliviers housing estate near the site of the attack.

Public prosecutor Jacques Beaume said the suspects, aged between 15 and 17, would likely be remanded in custody to allow for further investigation in a case which has shocked France.

Statements by bus passengers and local residents were behind the development, he told reporters: "These witnesses provided a series of clues which led us to the arrests of this morning."

Mama Galledou, a 26 year-old student of Senegalese origin, has been fighting for life since being hurt in the attack. Friends and well-wishers gathered outside the university where she studied to express their support.

"It's a crime. The law provides for 30 years imprisonment for this sort of incident," Beaume said.

Saturday's attack followed a series of incidents across France including some of the tough neighborhoods on the outskirts of Paris which were the scene of riots one year ago.

Sarkozy, the favorite to lead the right in next year's presidential polls, has pledged a crackdown on violence in the suburbs but the opposition Socialists accuse him of focusing more on the election campaign than on his duties as minister.

Chirac said more needed to be done to improve conditions in the many run-down suburbs outside big French cities but he backed Sarkozy's call for tougher penalties for young offenders.

"The action undertaken, in difficult conditions by the minister of the interior is good," he told Le Figaro newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday.

"You can't just let young people take to violence on the pretext that they're juveniles," he said.

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said police would be reinforced and security on public transport stepped up. He added that new measures to allow witnesses to come forward while remaining anonymous had brought clear results.

"The new anti-delinquency law will open new prospects," he said in parliament. "We have to encourage citizens to take charge. The security fight is a matter for everyone."

Segolene Royal, the Socialist frontrunner for the 2007 election campaign, demanded a five-year plan to improve youth integration in the suburbs and criticized government policies.

"The government is just dithering on this question," she told France 2 television. "I think the suburbs are suffering from constant changes and improvisation. There's no coherence."

Separately, authorities said they were investigating a complaint that a youth suffered an eye injury from a police "flashball" -- a weapon which fires a projectile designed to incapacitate without causing injury.
