My father told me how much his father disliked FDR back in the day. Maybe he could articulate his dislike for the man, but that didn't seem to really matter - if you didn't like a politician, you didn't vote for him. I don't think human behavior has changed much since the inception of this country. There were always be people who make decisions based on a feeling, and that's not always a bad thing, unless you're a Vulcan.

I think his message helped a lot.<snip>, "hope and change" is exactly what people were looking for. He was well spoken, had an energetic base, and was viewed as a refreshing alternative. Race and party probably got him quite a few votes but so did his campaigning.
