okay....my husband lives in Aurora (Toronto) in Ontario but has only lived there a year. He had previously lived over 30 years in Windsor, Ontario. He has to get the police certificate for CR1. First of all, he's under the impression that he should go to a local police station. Is that right? And when he goes....does he not need fingerprints? He has no police record. We were both confused by the information in the packet. When he goes to the station, whether it is a local one or the RCMP do they give him the certificate right there or does he have to wait to get it? If he waits...about how long is the wait? Thanks so much.

Your husband should go to the RCMP detachment nearest his place of residence. He should make sure he has identification with him (such as a driver's license). He should ask for a police certificate (based on a Canada-wide search). A fingerprint search is only required if he has a criminal record. I paid $35 for mine just over a month ago and I only had to wait about 10-15 minutes for it. Best of luck to you both!

If he isj in the Greater Toronto area, he can go to http://www.commissionaires.ca/ and get it done as well. cheers

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I was told to bring two forms of ID(passport and something else with a picture) and something from the consulate stating that I needed a record search. When I offered the stuff from Montreal to the woman, she glanced at it and said "I've seen lots of those before!", and didn't take it from me.

I got mine(2 copies) for free from the London RCMP detachment, and it took about 10 minutes. I'm pretty sure your fiance can go to his local police department as long as they do a Canada wide search and that it says so on the "certificate"(I use this loosely as it's basically just a piece of paper).

The York Regional PD won't do the police certificate (I used to live in Stouffville) He'll have to go down to Scarborough or Downtown Commissionaire's. Flames posted the link.

Its easy and painless, and they'll get it back to him in 5 days if he'll go back to pick it up, 6 days if he wants it mailed to him.

damn. we are so frustrated.Help!!! We are really having a tough time. I started a new topic yesterday asking people about police certificates in Ontario and I got several really nice answers. My husband has no police record so we were told and have read now in two different places that he doesn't need fingerprints. RIGHT? So...as per guidance from you all (and we are really grateful for all the help) my husband went to the RCMP in New Market today near his place. They told him that they don't do that there and that he had to go to Ottawa. The guy seemed to think that he had to have fingerprints. Has anyone out there gone to RCMP locations in Ontario and just gotten the certificate without prints? If so which detachment did you go to? One person already told me London. Also what should my husband be calling it---a records search as opposed to a police certificate? It is so frustrating when you all tell me that you got yours so easily and the RCMP is saying they can't do it there. What are we doing wrong?

Husband says "I need a Canada wide name check"

You don't need fingerprints unless you have a criminal record. The lady at London RCMP office said "sure you don't need fingerprints?" we said "not unless there is a criminal record, which he doesn't have"

Maybe try a different rcmp office. Sounds like they don't know wassup.

(we also did ours in London downtown RCMP, no problems, free, 10 minute wait)

It's a long way for him to drive, but the Windsor RCMP station also did just a name search - no fingerprints required. They also requested the 'proof' from immigration for the request. The report was available in about 15 minutes and cost $25, although that was 2 1/2 years ago.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

As I mentioned in the other thread, the Yorkies and York Regional RCMP do not do the immigration police certificates. Go to the Commissionaire's in either Scarborough, or Downtown Toronto. No fingerprints, just birthcertificate, passport, and/or driver's license.

My fiance lives in Quebec but works in Ottawa and when he went for his, he had to do fingerprints and they did it all at the rcmp....We told them it was for a visa. This took almost 3 months to get back but we knew he was going to need it because we have a friend who just went through this whole process...So am not sure but my fiance first went to the police and they sent him to the rcmp...So I don't know what is right for you really.....
