Hi everyone,

I got my GC through in the post last week, and am now looking at getting a job ASAP.

I'm curious as to what other VJ members think is a good salary?

$10 per hour? (probably not!)

$10-15 per hour

$15-20

or +$20 per hour?

what would you except and what would you consider is so low you wouldn't be able to live on it and pay the rent aswell?

It really depends on the region of the country you live in. NYC or California would be different than Indiana or Texas. Close to a metropolitan area or in a rural community.... Many variables

YMMV

yes it definitely depends on location, even within the same state that you are living in...for example I live in Florida on the west coast. You could probably get a one bedroom apartment in the Tampa bay area between $700-$1000 per month....but go to the east coast and that number goes up drastically, yet the east cost rate of pay seems to be a little higher than the west coast. so, you are going to have to just do your research on this one i am afraid to say.

Well i was working for Ford at the Atlanta plant as a temp worker until the plant was idled on friday and i was earning $20 an hour. That was a decent wage and was enough to live on and if it had been permanent then i would have let my wife quit her $10 an hour job if she wanted. I will probably be looking for $10 an hour or more now. Also the thing in the States is to get benefits like health insurance etc. A good wage is not as good if you have to spend it all on doctor bills.

I make an okay salary for someone who just graduated from college and majored in art history lol, but I have so many loans to repay, combined with the fact that I live in NYC, so I always feel like I have no money and no matter what I do, I can never accumulate any kind of savings... :(

For NYC, I'd say anything less than $40,000/year and you'd be dead broke, as I am.

I'd say $20+. $50+ if you can help it. $100+ is better.

In NYC, anything less than $50,000 p.a. is not an option, $50,000-80,000 is ok,

$80,000-100,000 is good, $100,000+ is very good. If you have kids, multiply

by 1.5 for each kid.

Your mileage may vary.

So if I have 5 kids I have to multiply by 1.5 exponentially? OMG no wonder I am broke.... :D

OK, don't do it exponentially. Use the formula:

Salary = Base Salary * (1 + 0.5 * N)

where N is the number of kids.

:P

Back in the early 90's, my wife and I and 2 kids in private scholl, with a house and a truck payment, and credit cards,we were earning $78,000/yr between us and not keeping up with bills. In '95 we were making about $85,000/yr and felt comfortable. Now living by myself without any credit cards, truck payments, kids, etc., I get by on about $9,000/yr. By the way I am in the San Francisco area.

What is "good" and what you're gonna get are 2 completely different animals :P

And it definitely will depend on where you live. Some cities (Like NYC, LA, Boston etc) have higher costs of living, so salaries are genearlly higher than say, Morganton, NC. About the highest you'll get here is maybe $10 an hour. Unless you're a doctor.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!
