hello my friend and welcome to the forum, after you receive the NOA-1, your I-130 needs to be processed and approved by the USCIS before it is sent to the NVC,depending on which service center is processing your I-130, the approval could take up to 5 months (not a fast process, sorry). After you receive approval, USCIS turns your file over to the NVC, in turn, the NVC will send you an email so you can name your agent, pay your fees, etc. Anyway, i would suggest start reading info posted on this forums and gather documents that you will need in the next phase of your journey.

Moved from IR-1/CR-1 Progress Reports to USCIS Service Centers forum; OP is asking about USCIS operations, not providing a case status update.

The OP is not asking about the NVC, the information you are providing, while correct, is not relevant to the OP's question. What the OP is asking about is how long do they have to wait before they are able to check the status of their file on a USCIS website.

 Thank you, Ryan. Also, I have one of those infamous receipt numbers that begin with MSC and it seems there are a few people saying that those numbers can not be checked. I read in a few posts that this was an error on their part that they are trying to clear up and then I realized that those posts were from 2006! I can't imagine the government is that slow to fix a problem... well, ya, I guess I can.
