Hi, all.

My fiance (the US citizen) and I are trying to figure out the timing for our wedding. In his state, they ask for "each applicant's Social Security number" to obtain a marriage license. Can you confirm I can get a SSN while I'm in the US on my K1? How long does it usually take?

Thank you!

This varies from country to country and some require an SS#, yes. Have your fiance call the County Clerk and ask, because it may not apply to you, but the only way to find out is by calling and asking.

If they, in fact, request a SS# from you, you should be able to get it around 2 weeks after you set foot in US soil (some times it takes less and sometimes it takes more than two weeks). This is the SS# guide http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

On my state's website, they claim that a social security number is required for a license. But once I actually called and spoke to the county clerk, I learned that was incorrect. That seems to be the case for a lot of people who call.

Agree with previous posters. Check with local county clerk office and/or google marriage laws for your state. The time frame for the SSN is largely dependent on the speed of the Customs and "Burro" Patrol 's government contractor inputting your I-94 data into their database. Should usually take about 2 weeks, it took them about six weeks to get my wife's info imputed this past August/September. :bonk:

YMMV

Good luck on your immigration journey.

You should be able to find that info. on the Internet by researching state marriage license requirements. In any case, after you arrive, I know it is recommended that you wait about 10 days before applying for a Social Security Number so that your I-94 can be entered into the system. After that, you go to the Social Security office to apply and you'll have the card within 2 weeks.

For those counties that require SS# to get a license (including the one we live at) that's the only information you can find online; that's the reasoning behind the suggestion of calling and asking.

Many VJ members have asked this question before and they only found out that the SS# requirement did not apply to them by calling only. Evylin is one of those members.

You should wait two to three week after you first arrive and then it took us one week to receive the SSN / card.

I guess you could but, my wife arrived 9/2/12, we went to SS office 9/4/12 and applied. Got her SS card in the mail 9/10/12. FWIW

If you do not want to wait the 2 weeks before you can get your SSN, then when you go to the court to apply for your marriage license, let them know you do not have your SSN yet. They should allow you to use your passport instead. If you are not in a rush to marry right away after entering the US, then you can simply wait until you receive your SSN. Follow the link Celeste posted above to get your SSN. Be sure to mark off "legal alien allowed to work" on the application form. Your card will come with the annotation "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION", and you will not actually be able to work until you file for AOS and receive your EAD or green card.
