They've always required proof of legal residency. I live in Iowa and immigrated in 2009. I got my licence in 2010 and had to show my GC to show legal status to get a licence. I also had to provide a letter that was at least 30 days old to show I lived in Iowa, my passport, my marriage certificate and my SSN. My SSN still had my maiden name as did my passport which is why I needed the marriage licence.

Ok, then maybe you can explain the new law going into affect Jan. 1, 2013 for LPR's to obtain a driver's license.

After some googling I found this link: http://www.localwireless.com/wap/news/text.jsp?sid=227&nid=2234122559&cid=4604&scid=-1&ith=1&title=Local+News&headtitle=Local+News

It's about Real ID's starting to be issued starting Jan 15, 2013: http://www.yourfortdodge.com/pages/14302252.php?

Here's another about the Real ID: http://www.northern-iowan.org/iowa-dmv-to-issue-new-form-of-identification-in-january-2013-1.2773786#.UHnuQa6KB40

As for the requirements for the Real ID. See here: http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/realid/faq.html And scroll down to the qn titled "What documents do I need to obtain a REAL ID-marked DL or ID card?" (it's too long to quote). Long story short... It's not going to be hard for your wife to follow the requirements.

Georgia have introduced a new system whereby if you provide certain IDs, you receive a license/ID with a star in the corner. It just means that you've been verified by them using the proofs you supplied. I wonder if they're surreptitiously trying to create a two-tier system here?

11/29/12 - AOS Interview in Atlanta - 10 minutes long and approved on the spot.

ROC in 2014!

All of this is due to federal requirements regarding enhanced drivers licenses, in lieu of (911 etc.) check each states site as to documents required.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.
