Arkansas Legislator: Slavery May Have Been a Blessing in Disguise

Hubbard, a first term Republican from Jonesboro, Ark., makes a series of racially charged statements in the self-published book, including saying that integration of schools is hurting white students, that African slaves had better lives under slavery than in Africa, that blacks are not contributing to society, and that a situation is developing the United States which is similar to that of Nazi Germany.

The questionable statements in Hubbard's book, "Letters to the Editor: Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative," were first reported by Arkansas Times andTalkBusiness.net.

Regarding slavery, Hubbard wrote:

"… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth." (Pages 183-89)

On the subject of school integration, Hubbard described black students as having a "a lack of discipline and ambition," which he said has hurt the entire educational system.

Hubbard also tackled immigration and said that Christians in America are in a similar position to that of Germans during Hitler's rise to power.

... the immigration issue, both legal and illegal ... will lead to planned wars or extermination. Although now this seems to be barbaric and uncivilized, it will at some point become as necessary as eating and breathing." (Page 9)

Hubbard declined to comment on the book when contacted by The Huffington Post, saying that he did not have time.

An Air Force veteran, Hubbard sells insurance in Arkansas and Missouri. He serves on several legislative committees, including ones dealing with issues related to aging, insurance, telecommunications, and waterways and aeronautics policy.

On his campaign website, Hubbard says he will defend Christianity as a state lawmaker.

"And perhaps the most important pledge I can make to the people of District 58, the citizens of Arkansas, and to myself, is to do whatever I can to defend, protect, and preserve our Christian heritage," Hubbard says on his website. "Regardless of one's religious beliefs, if we as a nation continue to turn away from those Christian principles and values upon which this great nation was founded, we will have truly lost everything worth saving!"

"All truth passes through three stages: First it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

-Arthur Schopenhauer

The question seems to be: are his contentions true or false?

Would Black Americans be better off in africa, today, 75 years ago or 150 years ago?

There is a quote by Booker T or Fredrick Douglas which answers this quite definitively.

Sometimes even our worse experience can come with a blessing or a silver lining.

When he speaks of immigration leading to wars or extermination, is there a precedence in history for this? Perhaps the American Indian might understand this question best.

As to the education system and whether Black students are less ambitious and disciplined. Political correctness is when everyone knows a truth but few have the courage to just say it.

It would seem to me to suggest Black kids work as hard and are as well behaved as say the typical Asian student and yet performs so much poorer is akin to suggesting they are inferior.

I don't defend this guy from ark, never heard of him but if we are a people of intellectual capacity why not examine his ideas and either prove or disprove them.

Eric Holder said we are a Nation of Cowards because we don't talk about Race and this is exactly why. any conversation must follow the same paradigm or template or the knives come out and the slander begins.

Are the Jews better off for the Holocaust having happened?

Would there be an Israel at all if it had not?

How far do you really want to go down this road?

Slavery is wrong and that is a moral imperative.

You can look for the silver lining all you want.

I am sure his next book will somehow look for the silver lining in the holocaust, as well.

See this is where you just get silly, who is claiming Slavery was not wrong or immoral?

Does stating the obvious make you feel big?

No, but the creation of Israel is a silver lining and a reminder of the Holocaust.

The creation of Israel did not necessitate the holocaust any more than Africans needed slavery to come to America.

The State of Israel could have been created as a result of any number of other less disgusting episodes in history, inasmuch as Africans could have immigrated to America as many others did, under far better and dignifying circumstances.

Is the irony lost on you that you are having this discussion in an immigration forum?

Step off the "omg i can't believe someone said that" box, and think for just one minute.

If you have any understanding of history beyond stupid talking points, you'd know the statements there aren't all that ignorant. They are ignorant on the extent of classifying everyone in the same boat, however there is a large part of the population over time that was greatly effected in a positive way. Personal experience at the end of the day rules ones own outlook on life.

It's pathetic to see articles like this that get people out of whack over the realities in this world. One mans curse is another man's blessing and vice verse. Many would do well to know and understand that. I'm amused by so-called liberals getting all bent out of shape by this book. Most don't even understand the pains and ills of the world. They only understand the bullshit that they are spoon-fed each and every day by blog sites and semi-news sites like HuffPo and mainstream news media who is doing everything in their power to upset them and keep you calm at the same time. If you want to know the fvcking truth; as much of a douche bag this guy may be for pointing out the realities that he sees, it's that slavery probably saved the lives of hundreds of thousands if not millions of African decedents. Look at the country today. It's no different than what it was 200 years ago. It's the same violent place, selling off and killing off their own people. Yes, slavery was a fvcking travesty and one of the worst parts of humanities evils, but the end results that came to pass were not all evil. Sometimes you have to look past the "shock" factor of some stupid story and look at reality.

Not really, because there's no legal avenue for immigration to the US based on economic hardship.

If there was one, all of Africa would be here today.

Yes it is almost as pathetic as your garrulous non-sequitur.

Well now there you go, doing what you are so good at, misrepresenting another s words or point.

I never used the word "better off" but you did.
