Another credit/credit card question

Wes has a credit card application he's working on. One of the questions is are you a US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.

When applying for credit is this a normal question?

What sort of other information have any of you had to reveal? Do they ever want the A number or any other of your 'immigration' markers?

And if so, is it really safe to give them out?

I was not asked on the forms I filled in for my Credit card if I was a citizen or not....

I would not give any of his immigration numbers to anyone they dont need then as they have no way of checking his status...

Any word yet on the name check?

Kezzie

Never been asked those questions. If they did, I probably wouldn't get a card from them on principal.

Yeah the Patriot Act is what I was thinking too.

Did you just have to show them the card or did they make a copy?

For those of you who want to know....this application is for a Discover Card.

I got my Discover card with no questions asked via the mail in form. Is Wes doing the same?

I'm pretty sure having an SSN or GC to open a bank account isn't a requirement under the Patriot Act, but the majority of banks are insisting on it. It may be more to do with the IRS on interest bearing accounts. I don't know why they spout the Patriot Act. Perhaps ask them to point out where in the PA it states this? I opened my account without a GC or SSN through Charter One, now Citizens.

I was asked for my SSN when my husband added me to his credit card contract. They told us if I wouldn't give my SSN, no credit information would be forwarded into my "file".

Since building credit was the purpose of adding me in the first place, that's what we gave them, but no information about my immigration status was asked for. We didn't even have an AOS interview scheduled then.

Good luck!

I opened my WaMu bank account with a foreign passport and no SSN.

No problems and no questions asked. Patriot Act my foot.

(They still don't have my SSN, BTW!)

Becca -- I believe the Bank of America asked me for my A# number

on their credit card application (which was denied anyway - insufficient

credit history.)

Besides the usual address, name, D.O.B and social security details etc.. I have been asked if I am a legal resident or a citizen on applications but that is as in depth as they have got.

I wouldn't give out any numbers besides my SSN if I were you.

Mark :)

rebeccajo,

In my experience, as other posters have also written, that question is unusual on a credit card application.

For my wife's first couple of credit cards we specifically chose applications that did not even ask about her employmetn or income, but instead asked for household income.

Thanks for the replies. We really appreciate it.

I guess I don't mind the question about the whether or not one is a citizen. I think it's a bit much for a credit card app but I guess all lenders are different.

I was uncomfortable with the thought of disclosing the A#. Everyone's input on this has helped me figure out what we should do.

I do remember, about 20 years ago, requiring a gentlemen to let us photocopy his greencard for a mortgage. But that was a mortgage (not a credit card for pity sake), and even then it was only required at closing. We didn't require the card just to process the loan but we wanted it to give him the money!
