go to Islamic Finder and put in your zip code there and it'll give you the exact direction to face. You can pick up a cheap compass at the local Wal-mart in the sporting goods store for a few dollars and if you don't know how to use it I'm sure Mark can show you. Just be sure not to use it around metal objects in your house because that can make it give a false reading.

Have you asked Mark which way he faces? He may have already figured it out.

I'm not sure where you're located but from most places in the Eastern US the direction is NE (north east).. at least it is on the east coast.

The general direction of the qibla in north america is north east. To find specifics on your location, go to Islamic Finder, put your zip code in, and find the link for monthly prayer times. After you click on it, you should find a compass on the left side of the page pointing the direction of prayer.

For more specific calculations, you can get a qibla compass. I have 2:

An electronic one - You select your location, and it will give you the direction of prayer and the prayer times for the day

A plastic one - it will come with a piece of paper with a number assigned for major world cities. You position the compass and it will point the direction to prayer.

If you're going up to Dearborn soon, I'm sure shops there will have some readily available.

You know, I always read that it's north east, but when looking at a map it always looks south east to me. I don't understand.

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

I bought this kind on ebay once and could never figure out how to use it. I eventually just threw it out and got a regular compass.

Melly, to answer your question... the way I understand it, since the Earth is not flat like it is on a map, we don't go by that. If it's on a globe I guess it's to the NE or when you fly there you go NE or something like that... I don't really understand all that curvature of the Earth and stuff... just that it prevents me from getting Huda TV on my satellite :P

Well a Qibla compass is always a good idea...or asking a fellow Muslim, but when all else fails look for the north star and then turn slightly northeast.

(note) can find qibla compasses in Dearborn Salwa in Huda shoppe on Warren Ave or the Islamic superstore on Michigan Ave. when you go next time! (F)

I have a plastic Qibla compass and it works fine. Hey Salwa you should've said something while we were in Dearborn! There are plenty of places there you can pick one up at. Like Henia said..Huda fashion on Warren (not far from Cedarland) is one place you can get one.

Get home soon, Henia, so we can have another MENA girl's night!
