Why are they still going higher? Oil prices are still below record highs.

I feel like there needs to be a few more refineries on the west coast. The big thing too is that Chevron really needs to upgrade their refinery...I think thats caught up in red tape at the moment, do you know if its the state causing the delay or the City of Richmond?

I haven't heard anything, other than the investigation found a bunch of corroded pipes that needed replacement, and that caused the fire. I don't know how extensive that was. But corrosion in Richmond? Gee, who wouldn't have thought to look for that!

Well even before the fire, Chevron was trying to get planning permission to modernize the refinery which I would think might increase capacity.

That sound familiar. Didn't they consolidate some of the smaller refineries over the last decade? Supposedly, newer equipment and better production methods mean increased capacity.

I feel bad for Californians getting hit with these crazy high gas prices. Maybe there's something your politicians can do for you to help bring those prices down. Something like a few new green laws to help the ozone and maybe raise the gas tax down there along with raising taxes for the oil companies there. Ya that should do it, and I bet gov. Brown would be all for something like that. Remember Californians...THINK GREEN!

As gas prices hit record high, police probe 1,000-gallon theft

October 6, 2012 | 2:50 pm

With gasoline prices in California setting new record highs, police in one Northern California community are dealing with gas thieves.

Police in Roseville are looking for gasoline thieves who struck two stations, taking nearly 1,000 gallons of the increasingly expensive fuel.

All the gas was stolen this week from a Shell station near the Roseville Square shopping center. And a few days earlier, thieves had made made an unsuccessful attempt at a 76 station a few blocks away, Fox40 in Sacramento reported.

According to the manager of the Shell station, a man in a black pickup pumped 300 gallons of gas, some of it going to a tank in the pickup's bed. It happened around 1:30 a.m., when the convenience store was closed.

But security cameras caught the thief using a credit card. The pump's meter was somehow disabled, and the manager had to check records to show that the gas was taken.

The same people came back during store hours twice, taking 350 gallons on both occasions. Each time there was no indication behind the counter that gas was being pumped.

California's average gasoline price set a record Saturday of $4.614 for a gallon of regular, up 12.8 cents overnight. Several service stations are charging more than $5 a gallon for regular gasoline.

Gasoline prices skyrocketed after the Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance was knocked offline Monday by a power outage. Other lingering refinery and pipeline problems also contributed to the soaring costs at the pump.

Gas prices in California rise to another new record

By David Colker

October 7, 2012, 10:17 a.m.

The pain at the pump continues.

The average price of regular gas in California hit a record average of $4.655 on Sunday, according to the AAA's daily fuel gauge report. That's a rise of 4.1 cents overnight.

If there is any good news, the rise is slowing. On Saturday, the overnight price rise was 12.8 cents.

Furthermore, if you tend to look at the world with a glass-half-full view, the $4.655 price breakthrough Sunday is not a record if inflation is taken into account. The current price of regular would have to hit about $4.93 to match the record set in 2008.

The main reason for the soaring gasoline prices this week is the shutdown of the Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance due to a power outage, but other problems with refineries and pipelines also contributed.

Why gas price are going up

Just a month ago, the average price for regular in the state was $4.17. A year ago it was at $3.803.

The highest average price Sunday for regular in metropolitan areas covered by the AAA report is in San Luis Obispo where it's at $4.740.

In the Los Angeles-Long Beach area, motorists filling up Sunday are paying an average of $4.696 for regular. In Orange County it's $4.686, Ventura hit $4.689 and the Riverside-San Bernardino area is at $4.67. In San Francisco, the average is $4.731.

Some relief is probably in sight because the Exxon refinery went back on line Friday. But California will probably remain well above most of the nation when it comes to gas prices.

The U.S. average on Sunday was $3.814 for a gallon a regular, according to the AAA.

California gasoline prices hit all-time high - twice

By CHRISTOPHER WEBER | Associated Press – 10 hrs ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California motorists faced another day of record-breaking gasoline prices Sunday, though relief appeared to be on the way.

In its latest update early Sunday, AAA reported that the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.655. Saturday's average of $4.6140 was the highest since June 19, 2008, when it was $4.6096.

The four-penny-per-gallon jump Sunday was less than Saturday's increase, which was 12 cents.

Sunday's price, like Saturday's, was the highest in the nation, with the Golden State overtaking Hawaii as the state with the most expensive fuel due to a temporary reduction in supply.

In some locations, fuming motorists paid $5 or more per gallon while station owners had to shut down pumps in others.

A station in Long Beach had California's priciest gas at $6.65 for a gallon of regular, according to GasBuddy.com. Meanwhile customers at an outlet in San Pablo paid just $3.49, the lowest price in the state.

The average for a gallon of regular was $4.69 in Los Angeles, $4.71 in San Diego and San Francisco, $4.55 in Sacramento and $4.90 in Santa Barbara, according to GasBuddy.com.

The dramatic surge came after a power outage Monday at a Southern California refinery that reduced supply in an already fragile and volatile market, analysts said. The refinery came back online Friday and prices were expected to stabilize in the coming days.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, predicted the average price could peak as high as $4.85 before coming back down.

So strange that they too use 'fossil' fuels.

I thought cars in California ran on Unicorn farts and puppy dog tails.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Clue: The economy is still tanking.

Clue: The economy is growing rather than contracting. The difference in economic growth between then and now is roughly 10% of GDP (1%-2% of growth vs. 9% of contraction.) The economy is and has been adding between 100K - 150K jobs/month instead of shedding 700K - 800K jobs a month. You might think that economic contraction at a 9% clip is the same as economic growth of 1%-2% and that adding 100K - 150K jobs a month is the same as shedding 700K - 800K jobs a month but that doesn't make it so in the real world.

1% to 2% is spinning. Under 1.5% is more accurate, and not enough to sustain the economy. The workforce is the smallest it has been since Obama took office.

The economy is barely treading water. From a business sense, that means only a fool would look to expand or invest in this environment. The tax liability outlook looks severe if current law remains in effect and gets even more severe, if some of the policies being discussed become law. Sorry, we are still in the tank, and if predictions hold, we will be going under again in January.

California gov takes action as gas prices keep rising

By CHRISTOPHER WEBER | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown is taking action in an effort to drive down the cost of gasoline as California drivers cope with record-breaking prices at the pump.

For the third straight day Monday, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular rose to an all-time high, hitting $4.668, according to AAA.

That topped Sunday's price of $4.655 and Saturday's price of $4.6140, which broke the previous record high of $4.6096 per gallon set on June 19, 2008.

Due to a temporary reduction in supply, California gas prices in recent days have surpassed those in Hawaii to become the highest in the nation.

Brown on Sunday ordered state smog regulators to allow winter-blend gasoline to be sold in California earlier than usual to bring down prices.

Winter-blend gas typically isn't sold until after October 31. Few refineries outside the state are currently making summer-blend gas, putting the pressure on already-taxed California manufacturers.

$4,500 in Gas Siphoned in Latest California Pump Heist

By Anthony Castellano | ABC News Blogs – 2 hours 25 minutes ago

With the price of gas in California reaching record highs, thieves are increasingly targeting gas tanks with the most recent heist siphoning more than $4,500 from a gas station over a span of three days.

Police in Roseville, Calif., have arrested a man for allegedly stealing more than 1,100 gallons of gas from a Shell station four times in three days starting on Sept. 27.

Roseville Police told ABC News that a male suspect is in custody, but they are still looking for a female suspect who they've identified. The truck was located and recovered by police with 110 gallons of gas on board. The gas has since been turned over the the station's manager, Tony Sandhu.

Sandhu told ABC News affiliate KABC-TV Saturday that the thieves rolled up to the station in a pickup truck and managed to bypass the pay-at-the-pump meter on Sept. 27. The thieves pumped 300 gallons of gas into a tank that was located in the back of the truck around 1:30 a.m., according to police.

The station was closed at the time and it's not clear how the thieves turned on the pump.

"I don't know if we can recover that money or not, but at least those people should go to jail," said Sandhu.

Police believe thieves came back twice the next day while the station was closed and drove off with hundreds of gallons of gas. Then, they came back the following day during store hours to steal even more.

Sandhu told KABC that security cameras caught the thieves siphoning the gas and when they returned during business hours, a cashier recognized the truck and took down the licenses plate.

"It actually brought it to the attention of the owner because he was short on his tallies for his amount of gas," said Lt. Cal Walstad of the Roseville Police Department.

In all, the thieves managed to get away with 1,153 gallons of the liquid gold, according to police.

The price of gas hit an all-time average high in California on Sunday, costing drivers $4.70 a gallon, up 53 cents from last week's average.

Recent refinery fires in the state and pipeline problems are the culprits behind the high prices that are causing California reserves to hit a 10-year low.

Earlier this summer, thieves punctured tanks and cut fuel lines in a fleet of rental trucks in southern California. This past spring at another Sacramento gas station, two men were caught on camera prying open an underground tank and funneling thousands of dollars of gas straight into their fake bread truck.

Analysts predict that relief is in sight and prices will bottom out near $3.50 a gallon by Thanksgiving, which is one of the busiest times for traveling.
