https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/82/~/travelers-bringing-food-into-the-u.s.-for-personal-use I remember when I was coming home from Senegal the first time in 2009 there was a man that brought dried fish and some spices back. The customs lady was not too happy, but she said it was legal then. So maybe this article will help you.

You can get all those and more locally and quite cheap too. There's an international market in downtown LA where you can buy in bulk for those in the general area at even ridiculous savings.

I have Amala, Iyan (pounded yam), Garium Suplhate (let's see if my Naija people go figure this one out), Ewa, Panla, Egusi, etc all in my pantry.

Thanks, but I live in a small town and access to African foodstuff is not available where we live. He will probably do best to shop at the Mexican market where they sell plantains and see what he likes.

Smooth Gari ( answer to your chemical description ) Also your local community will help you with finding things like bitter leaf and greens. Introduce him to habenero peppers Joseph loves these.

Thanks for the habenero tip, I was thinking about maybe some wasabi sauce lol

I live in Nebraska....and even I have two African food stores within 50 miles...so you may have more access than you think. Also, you can buy some of the things you are looking for online too. I'd be happy to send you some stuff if you can't find it nearby--just message me.

My husband just discovered wasabi and LOVES it!
