People who would probably have been considered traitors back then are now living and thriving in nations they have little or no respect for...

Traitors, eh? Consider this - and it's a Republican writing this. A Republican traitor in your book, I guess.

So, here we are a decade or so later from our conservative "revolution" of 1994.

Privacy, individual freedom and rights - forget about it; we're at war.

Smaller government - forget about it; we're at war.

Cutting wasteful spending by members of Congress - forget about it; we're at war.

Free speech - forget about it. We need to be re-elected. And besides, we're at war.

Despicable and scandalous behavior by members of our party - we'll handle it later; we're busy with Katrina legislation, and besides, we're at war.

Massive budget deficits - don't worry about it. It'll all work out because - you guessed it - we're at war.

Want to revamp a bankrupt Social Security system? Forget about it - we need to be re-elected, and besides that, don't forget that we're at war.

Finally, 12 million underclass immigrants want to pay taxes voluntarily and legally by living "free" or "die" trying. Forget about it; we don't want you here.

Forget how my president, Ronald Reagan, addressed this problem in the past and go home.

Forget that legal and illegal immigrants were jumping out of the World Trade Center along with natural-born Americans.

On second thought, let's never forget that.

Forget that hundreds of thousands of Americans have died fighting so that we could live free and without tyranny or fear of any governmental authority.

I support the war on terror and I support fighting it on foreign lands rather than having to fight it here.

But I can't support using the war on terror as an excuse to erode the very bedrock of our Republican principles. Do that and we've lost the war, regardless of the outcome of the battles we may fight in Iraq.

What a difference a decade makes.

I wonder what happened to my Republican Party.
