Hi, I just want to know if anybody has experience of driving with a valid computerized foreign driver's license in the U.S till the time a state license is issued. My husband has a valid Pakistani computerized driver's license, but has to complete a month residency requirement to be eligible to apply for a Texas state driver's license and ID. Can he drive using his valid foreign drivers license till the time he applies for a state license?

Thanks

An International Driving Permit (IDP) translates information contained on your driver's license into 10 languages so that officials in foreign countries are able to interpret your license. An IDP supplements a valid government-issued license. It does not serve as a replacement for a license. If you are stopped by law enforcement, you will most likely be asked to produce both your IDP and your official driver's license.

I've driven on my foreign license for abt a month until I got my local American license. I think it depends on the state laws so you may want to check with your local DMV as some states allow it up to 90 days.

I got my GC based on an F2B which later converted to an F2A. It took close to 10yrs during which I tried applying for the DV unsuccessfully. My GF who is a first time applicant got selected for DV2015! We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Each state law varies but be very carefull to the exclusions Pakistan specifically is a country excluded from the list of countries permitted to drive in USA. Majority states will provide a temporary license immediately after passing written test.

Here is a link that should answer your questions In detail.

it depends on the state. for example in NY state, if you have a driver license from another country and you going to stay in NY for a short period then you can use your foreign driver license for the time you are in NY, but if you are an immigrant and you plan to stay in NY for longer period, then you must get a state valid driver license after going through all the requirements.

I would strongly suggest you don't allow him to drive, he could be arrested for driving without a license even if he shows them his pakistani passport, this is a misdemeanor. I know this because i am a Criminal Defense Attorney in NY state and therefore see people charge with this crime everyday.

Just wait 1 month.
