So today I'm taking my fiance to the SS office to get his SSN and to change mine. But we ran into a problem.

I cannot find any of our paper work I copied and saved from our earlier processes of the I-29s, etc.

So is this a problem? Is there any other way I can do this. I feel as if the large folder I had all the things kept in were lost during the move, or misplaced somewhere.

Thank you.

I'm not sure exactly what you think you need... you are calling him your fiance so is he your husband now and that's why you're also changing your name?

You will need his I-94 which is in his passport and there needs to be at least 2 weeks left on that. You will also need his k1 visa (also in passport). Passport of course as ID which you're bringing for the other 2 things so you're good.

If the I-94 has expired (or it has less than 2 weeks on it) he can't get a SSN until he gets his EAD or greencard.

Alright, and thank you. Hopefully I can find his passport and locate all of this.

Also, it's still a bit of a habit to call him my fiance.. I feel like everything is the same now that we're married. Haha.

edit- So I checked in his passport.. Found the visa, and I believe the I-94. What does the I-94 look like?

The I94 is a white card that should be stapled to the passport. Also, you have to wait at least 2 wks from POE before filing. They also asked for my husbands birth certificate.

I believe the OP's spouse immigrated on a K-1 visa. The K-1 process is a little different from the IR-1/CR-1 process, so part of your instructions require correction. At this point the former K-1 visa holder will not have a conditional GC until after the AOS process, which is several months down the road. After the CBP puts their POE immigration data into their I-94 database, typically ~2 weeks (my wife's recently took 6 weeks). The immigrant spouse will need to take their foreign unexpired foreign passport containing their unexpired Form I-94 (stapled inside), a certified copy of the marriage license, and a completed SS-5 to the local Social Security office and apply for their SSN.

NB: I am not an attorney either. However, I am the spouse/chauffeur of a person that recently immigrated to America on a K-1 visa.

YMMV.
