Hot, dry summer breaks century-old record

August and September were the driest since 1896

This summer’s warm weather has been the driest August and September on record.

Only eight millilitres of rain fell over those months this year, breaking the previous record set in 1907 of 9 ml of precipitation in August and September.

The 1907 record was set in Steveston, where weather data dates back to 1896.

Records have been kept in Vancouver since 1937.

The record for the month of August alone was set in 1986, when there was zero recorded rainfall.

There was 3 ml of rain this August.

For September, the record is 0.3 ml, set in 1975. This year, 5 ml of rain was recorded at Vancouver International Airport.

It’s expected the dry conditions will stick around — there’s still no rain in this week’s forecast.

Dog survives 110-mile ride on pickup's engine during Calif. heat wave

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — A dog has survived a 110-mile ride on the hot engine of a pickup truck during a Southern California heat wave.

The driver of a Chevrolet Silverado felt the pickup move slightly after he stopped in San Clemente on Monday. He had just driven from Chino to Orange and Camp Pendleton.

The Orange County Register (bit.ly/QFtxvg) says 52-year-old Jaime Magaña noticed fur above the left front tire and he opened the hood to find a 25-pound dog atop the engine.

Temperatures outside were nudging 100 degrees.

Magaña called for help and an animal control officer put the dog, nicknamed Chevy, into her air conditioned truck.

It perked right up.

Magaña says he's seen the dog in his Chino neighborhood.

The hunt is on for the dog's owner.

We've had more rain this summer than I've seen since I moved down here. It seemed to have been cooler / less humid than in previous summers, too. I first thought that maybe I'm just getting used to it but my electric bill confirms that it was not as hot as it was last year - I've had the lowest summer electric bills yet. And electricity rates have not come down.

Yep. The summer was unusually cool here. I pulled the AC out of the window a month ago. This is the hottest I have seen since June. The heat wave ends tonight, they say. They said the same last night. I think they were wrong.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
