We are considering getting married in my hometown, which is a suburb of Pittsburgh. To do this, we'd need to secure a marriage license from Allegheny County.

Thing is, I currently live in Connecticut, which makes the process slightly more of a hassle, especially if Allegheny County requires a SSN. (Online, it says they require it, but as my fiancé says, 'We already applied for the damn fiancé visa, let's go to Vegas.' Sometimes websites aren't clear.) We'd have to apply for the social security number, wait for it to be mailed, and then drive home to arrange to get married and god help us if the Social Security Administration office hit the happy sauce that week. Sounds like that can't be right; SSNs are for work, so I'm wondering if they're just a proxy for 'here legally'.

Anyone have any personal experience getting married in Allegheny County? Did you need a social security number? Was the passport + I-94 + visa stamp enough? Any tips on navigating the system?

Thanks!

I do!

I didn't have my SSN when we applied, she just put N/A under my details.

Not sure if you've looked here already.. http://www.county.allegheny.pa.us/REGWILLS/regplan.asp

We took all different things with us, she didn't ask for half of them - not even my husbands drivers licence. I took my passport including I-94 - to be honest I don't even remember her looking at it.

She did take my previous decree absolute and kept it. I then had to apply for a "triple seal" after we were married, which was our application for marriage, marriage certificate and my decree.

Where are you planning on marrying?

If you need any more help, PM me. I still have all of the forms she gave us etc.

Thanks, I did see that! I was worried as the form says that it requires a social security number and a photo ID. The ID's not the problem, but the SSN could be. Did you apply ahead of time, or in person?

We're not sure. We might get married out at St. Louise near where I grew up, but the more this process and my parents/relatives/sisters/world gets on my nerves, the more I'm thinking I just want a civil wedding in Connecticut.

We went in person to the county building about 2 weeks before and got the licence in the mail within the week.

Good luck with the plans :)

I live in Delaware County(near Philly) and saw this too. I believe I called before I read anything and the woman said they'll take a number from the visa, so I'm guessing(praying) my fiancee won't need a SS number. She's planning on coming a week before or wedding so needing a SS could throw a wrench into things.

Seriously. After dealing with Homeland and State, I'm not going to deal with the SSA and then the marriage office in Allegheny County! Anyone else need a pound a-flesh?

Razzin-frazzin-rootin-tootin bureaucracy.

Will call Monday and try to get a straight answer (and something in writing).

I just called my county seat and they said since my fiancee doesn't/won't have a SS in time, a valid passport/visa number is what they'll use. Hope this helps all of us.

I also got married in Pittsburgh.

I had a social so I cant help you with that. But I do think that you both have to go in person, and the license is mailed to you within a week or so.

Good luck with your wedding!

I just got back from Allegheny County in P-Burgh yesterday (I attended my best friend's wedding in Springdale). Anyway, I saw from a distance their marriage license, but I do not know what they had to do to get it...sorry I can't be of help! Just thought that was cool, since I was just there... :star:
