Does anybody know if my foreign fiance from Brazil would be eligable for any discount on tuition or what is the most common tuition expenses she will have to incur? Are they just out of state tuition? What are your thoughts...

Education or child psychology. She currently has that degree in Brazil but we fear the credits will not transfer. Do you have any advice?

It will be cheaper when she has the green card.

There's no discount for international students. Generally, international students pay an amount similar to out-of-state students.

To get in-state tuition, a person must be a legal resident for a year in California. It might be similar in your state at the school your fiancee wants to go to.

I know several immigrants who choose to wait until they qualify for in-state tuition before attending college. International student tuition and out-of-state tuition were way too high - usually 3x or 4x regular tuition.

As mentioned, no discounts for being a foreigner. Some people get the military to pay for their education (inreturn for enlisting for 4+ years after graduating), but not sure that would work with her field.

There are some scholarships for foreigners to study in the USA, but those are for people intending to return home and enrich their home country with what they have learnt in the USA. Your best bet is to wait until she can get in-state tuition- in some states, that is only 3 months, in some up to a year.

You may want to check with the specific institution she wants to attend. Maryland has the same rules about in-state tuition but there is an exception in the rules for a K-1 fiance visa holder married to a US citizen who is a resident. My wife did qualify for in-state tuition the moment we married. As far as degree transfering there are organizations in the USA that evaluate her coursework and degree for a fee.

Also, if she waits until she has her green card, she can apply for financial aid if necessary.

:wow: We would like to sign up on that program! The newly immigrated step-son is currently attending a local state-run community college, at the non-resident tuition rate (approximately double the resident rate) for this quarter. We have been working hard at getting him resident status for winter quarter 2012 (next quarter), and got tentative approval of his residency status. I arranged a meeting with a financial aids official at the college and had good results. It is certainly more low-key than at the local large state-run university, the same texts are used and the classes are smaller. He is hoping to pursue a transfer to the university in 2 years. BTW, the difference in the quarterly non-resident tuition between the community college and the university was significant (i.e., ~$3,500 vs. ~$10,000)! These are a few of the myriad of reasons why we opted for the community college route for my stepson.

YMMV.

Good luck on your immigration journey.
