It's by defacto. The previous administration pushed their economic agenda through Congress, giving huge tax cuts to the richest Americans under the argument that they are the job creators and doing so would not only spur the economy and job growth, but reduce the deficit. It did the opposite, in fact. While there were some Democrats who voted in favor of the Bush Tax Cuts, the Bush Administration and their economic team gets the credit. And while Republicans moan and groan when Democrats give credit where credit is due, we all know they would expect nothing less had the Bush Tax Cuts actually achieved what they were designed to do. Unfortunately, they were an economic disaster, built on faulty economic policy.

And for RunHershelRun - the relevance to that truth is that we have two very different ideas about how to steer the economy in this upcoming election. We can choose between one candidate who still clings on to the idea that such policies will work, and the other candidate who's economic policies are more in line with Clinton's. This election is as much about comparing the economies under Clinton vs. GWB, as it is about Obama vs. Romney.

He deserves all the credit for the consequences of his economic policies he gets. So, you can either try and argue that in spite of what the numbers show, the Bush Tax Cuts were a success, or you can accept that they were a failure. Which is it?

Why would the right be looking for any defense at all? The going theory is that everyone is succeeding or failing all on their own. When people don't have a job, so the theory goes, they ought not to get any help from society but rather should get off the couch and get their lazy arses into gear. If one does not have the job that pays them what their qualifications would suggest they're worth, then they just need to work harder and take the required risks and they will succeed. The going theory is that government can't do anything in helping to stimulate economic and job growth. If all that's true, then what is there actually to defend? If average wages slip, then all that says is that people don't work hard enough. If that now falls on the President, then you're admitting that the economic theories you're pushing are pure garbage.

Strange thing about politics and another reason I cannot be either a Dem or Repub. Who is happy about this? You Danno? Are you happy that incomes have fallen? I am not. Why are you happy? Amnesia? The economy was contracting at a rate of 9% 4 years ago. The economy shed greater than half a million jobs a month 4 years ago. The stock market was on a sliding path to losing 50% - half of the value of the stock market was wiped out. How is the economy worse today?

HOw do you conclude I would be happy about so many people having their income diminished?

Sure I shake my head at those who wish to go farther down this path with Obama, but we all know people hurting, it would be a sick soul who rejoices at their loss.
