The thing everyone is overlooking (perhaps deliberately) is that there are other things that have value in addition to money. Sometimes volunteering provides you with benefits money can't give. If you want some more tangible benefits, volunteering is still an excellent way to gain experience as well as provide exposure for your marketable skills to someone who may not have a job available now but will have in the future. I obtained one of my best jobs ever because I had volunteered somewhere and my future employer remembered the quality of the work I did and when a job became available, I was his first choice.

Yes, volunteering can look as good or even better than actual work experience on a resume.

This reminds me of this quote from the movie Goodfellas.

Henry Hill: [narrating] Now the guy's got Paulie as a partner. Any problems, he goes to Paulie. Trouble with the bill? He can go to Paulie. Trouble with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he can call Paulie. But now the guy's gotta come up with Paulie's money every week, no matter what. Business bad? you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? you, pay me. Place got hit by lightning, huh? you, pay me.

An excellent place to volunteer, but you will probably see things that are quite upsetting.

Exactly. I don't know if I can deal with it.

I told my wife I wanted her to send out ten resumes a day. I was lucky if she did one every two weeks. I usually dropped her at the library, or the jobs center, or an old friend of mine's house where she could hang with his Filipina wife. My business is outcall, so when I am working, I could either let her ride along with me to some interesting places, or drop her off somewhere, and pick her up on the way back. Funny thing is, she finally got a job at the one place I picked out for her, but she was reluctant to apply for, until I finally goaded her into doing so. She is still working there.

My wife couldn't get a job fast enough enough for her tastes. It was all I could do to keep her from working before her EAD arrived. Then when it did arrive she had a job in I think it was two weeks. She's on her third one now. First was just a few weeks in a factory, which she didn't like. Then an office job, but no thinking. Now she's a temp to hire at an office job that requires thinking, and scared to death they won't hire her when the 6 month term ends. Things have slowed down there and they've been letting temps go lately. Some have been there longer, others have been there shorter times. My guess is they're dropping the less valuable ones so they can hire the best of them, which I have good reason to think she's one of.

Exactly. I don't know if I can deal with it.

Then find a no kill shelter or rescue group. They're always looking for help.

This is the first job I got in the US, a few weeks after I got my EAD. I started as a temp and luckily got hired on permanently. Not working nearly drove me crazy.

They are a no kill shelter. My heart still breaks when people drop off their animals like they're taking out the trash.

I used to foster for a rescue group, but my wife couldn't handle giving the dogs up afterwards. There was only one dog she was happy to see go, out of about 7 I fostered after she got here. I got attached to most of them to, but you need to keep the mindset that you're helping to dog, not making it family.

I volunteered at one when I was a teen and we drop off things at the local one (cat carriers and other needs), but I find the hardest part is seeing the way the animals live at a shelter...tiny cages, too many in one place, etc.

From what I've seen of the shelter here, they have plenty of room. I've visited both the dogs and the cats (ended up adopting one) and their situations, while not ideal, are better than other shelters I've seen.

Volunteering and voluntary charity giving is one of the basic underpinnings of Libertarianism, so I don't see a conflict. The key here is that it is voluntary and if people didn't do it, then the government would need to step in. Actually not volunteering sounds a little socialist. As far as I can understand from my husband, people don't volunteer in Denmark because the government pays people to do it. ;)
