Troy N.Y.: "This is one of my two systems — 50KW on the ground. The other is 50 KW on roof of my freezer (no pics yet). This ground mount system is saving us at least $600 per month. The total savings [from the two systems] is about $1200 per month. ~ Mark Duncan, VP of Sycaway Creamery.

Now in reality he won't notice that savings for 20 years after paying tens of thousands of dollars per set, but hey... you're saving eventually!

Subsidies are great. You actually bought the solar panels for him.

Yeah, like corn, nuclear, oil, natural gas and coal. Subsidized energy has been around a lot longer than solar power.

Many who use solar power may end up putting electricity back in the grid, especially if you live in the sun-drenched states of the SW, which incidentally, are the very states where electricity is an issue...

Reagan removed them in 1986

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/thepresidentandcabinet/tp/History-of-White-House-Solar-Panels.htm

President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, and one of his first moves was to order the solar panels removed. It was clear Reagan had a completely different take on energy consumption. "Reagan's political philosophy viewed the free market as the best arbiter of what was good for the country. Corporate self-interest, he felt, would steer the country in the right direction," the author Natalie Goldstein wrote in "Global Warming."

George Charles Szego, the engineer who persuaded Carter to install the solar panels, reportedly claimed that Reagan Chief of Staff Donald T. Regan "felt that the equipment was just a joke, and he had it taken down." The panels were removed in 1986 when work was being done on the White House roof below the panels.

Translation: The oil companies needed more subsidies....

Actually the panels were paid for by the New York energy Research and Development Association and another private party. The private party will then get the full money realized from tax write-downs (I think - the articles have been a little vague) so these panels cost the company itself nothing.

There will be no selling power back tot he power company - the two sets of panels are each on different meters.. One is expected to push back a meter to 51% and the other to 46% .. Over two decades the expectation is the panels will meet 25% of total requirements... 100 kilowatts ... assuming they can get 50% out of those panels that is about 20-25 homes..

Here's a quickie from sunny Germany, which in short order has become the world's leading solar power market:

Initial reports say that Germans installed roughly 320-megawatts peak (MWp) of additional solar power capacity in August.

That takes total installed solar power capacity to more than 30-gigawatts peak (GWp), making Germany the first country in the world to generate so much electricity from sunshine.

There's now more solar power installed in Germany than the rest of Europe combined, note industry watchers from Germany Trade & Invest, the national foreign trade and inward investment promotion agency. They'll be sharing their insights on latest trends in the German and other solar power markets around the world at this week's EUPVSEC in Frankfurt September 24-28.

The U.S. installed 740 megawatts of solar last quarter.. the previous two quarters were 512 megawatts and 790 megawatts. .The total now being just under 6 gigawatts.. But seeing how in 2010 we averaged 150 megawatts a quarter things are progressing rapidly now as the prices drop... Once it makes real sense money-wise it will explode.
