ON DS 230, DOES MY HUSBAND CHECK THAT HE WILL WANT A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER? SEEMS LIKE A WEIRD QUESTION, DON'T ALL PEOPLE COMING TO THE STATES WANT ONE?

They should, but if you don't check that off you must go to an SSA office once you arrive to apply. By checking off on the DS-230 he will hopefully be assigned one without going to an SSA office to apply. Once he arrives give it three weeks to receive the SSN card. If the card doesn't arrive within three weeks he will need to go into an SSA office and most likely need to submit an application to be assgned an SSN.

mdyoung explained it well.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

When an individual indicates on the DS0-230 that he or she would like to be assigned an SSN when applying for an immigrant visa, one of three things may happen:

1. The application information is not transmitted correctly from the

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of State (DOS)

and the individual must go into a Social Security office to submit

an SSN application.

2. The application information partially transmits from DHS and

DOS and the individual must go into a Social Security office. If

the exception can be corrected the SSN can be assign and card

issued. Otherwise, the individual must submit an SSN application.

3. The application information transmits correctly from DHS and DOS and

the individual is assigned an SSN and the card is mailed to address

provided to DHS for the mailing of the I-551 card.

Only for individuals age 18 or older that have been issued an immigrant visa and all K visa classifications are nonimmigrant.
