Hi All,

I recently read a long thread about traveling outside the US with your green card and from what I gathered the threshold for risking having the green card taken away is being abroad for 6 months or more (even though the official time limit allowed is 1 year).

So my question is, does that mean that my wife (who will have a green card) and I could stay abroad for 3 or 4 month periods at a time for the full 3 years that we are waiting for her to be eligible for citizenship without risking her green card being revoked?

I have read that to be completely safe as long as it's 5.5 months or less then the officials won't take a second look at you, but it seems to me that if they look at the stamps and see multiple trips throughout the year for 3 or 4 months each, this would also be suspicious.

Thanks in advance for you answers!

She would never have the time in the US to be eligible for citizenship under your scenario. Take a look at the N400 to learn about that.

Could also run the risk of losing the GC.

You heard wrong. Any time out of the US can be used in determining if you have abandoned residency, even less than 6 months.

If you spend more time abroad, no matter how often you come back, will lead to issues. A GC is for living in the US.

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
