You're almost out of time to get your SS number. I forget the exact number of days, but I think it's something like once you have been here 76 days on your K1 they won't issue a SS number till you've got your greencard.

mdyoung will probably step in here now and tell us the exact number of days if we are lucky.

At any rate, I'd be getting on that right away if I were you.

Yes, 76 days -- or 14 days or less before the expiration of the visa.

Hey....what should you do.....hmmmmm....just my 2 cents worth, this is what we did:

Got here April 14, married a month later, THEN applied for a SSN using my married name. I brought with me the filled up form, my passport, my certified copy of the marriage certificate. Was in and out of the SSS office in 45 mins. They processed my card and i got it in the mail a few weeks later.

However, it seems that not all SS offices work the same way. I know of someone who did the same thing i did...got married before applying for the SSN. Unfortunately, the people there said she should have filed for a SSN while she was single, then had the name changed after she got married. But since she is now married and doesnt have the SSN yet, she has to wait for the GC to arrive.

If i remember right, she should have been given the SSN. Like the previous poster above, I suggest you do a search of the post of a fellow member here... md young...his post about the nuances involved in getting the SSN is very helpful...sorry i just could not find the link now.

Well....hope all goes well for you both...enjoy your wedding!

Hi,

I will be going through AOS via employment based petition. I have a visa but my fiance doesn't have one. Is it a good idea to get married first in my home country before I fly to US? So that I could include him in my petition, instead of waiting for 5 years for me to become a US citizen. We're both non US citizen/non-immigrant.

Thanks for the reply. I called the Social Security office(1-800-772-1213) and they told me that I should apply after getting married since I will change my name too.

Just remember if you wait past the 76 day mark you will not be able to apply for your SSN card until after you receive your EAD or GC ...

Unfortunately I can't give you experience when you are changing your name as I didn't have to do this because I am the husband but I thought you can apply in your maiden name now and then get it changed later after your married ... This way you would have a SSN card before your EAD or CG ...

It looks like you still have time after your wedding to apply for the SSN card and still be under the 76 day mark ...

Expiration of the I-94. When the visa expires is not relevant.

Yes, 76 days -- or 14 days or less before the expiration of the visa.

That's what I meant to say, though what I mean to type and what I type are so two different things! Thanks for clarifying that ...esp for the OP!

I know what you mean.

Do you ever get in your car to go someplace, and after arriving realize that you've gone someplace entirely different than where you intended? I do it at least once a month.

Oh, I've done that before! Usually I get into a car to, I don't know, let's say go out to dinner with my husband, and then half an hour later, we realize we have no idea where we're going because we've just been driving, and now we're at the mall, Target, or anywhere that isn't a place to eat!
