Hola Chicos! My hubby's interview is in two weeks and I have questions about the medical....does anyone know if you can get one or more of the vaccines before you go so that you don't have to pay "un ojo de la cara" when you get there?

Where my hubby lives he can get vaccines for free, but how can I find out which ones he needs and if they will "count" when he has his medical exam.

He has no immunization records or anything! So even something simple may be a big help.

What were your experiences with the medical?

Thank you so much for any answers that you have!

Yes, he believe can as long as he has documentation stating which vaccines he has. I have a friend who husband got his here in the states before he left to Mexico and they accepted it. Also, my husband got his here in the states before he left and has documentation he will be taking with him to his medical. Our appointment is on Oct. 12th. Good luck to you.

Thank you! How did you find out which ones you needed to get? I forgot to mention that my husband is in Mexico, not in the US. Does it matter?

It shouldn't matter that he is in Mexico. And, here is a link to the list of vaccines that he may need.

We have a friend who went through this a few months ago and my husband was grilling her for details yesterday. According to her, she had all her immunizations up to date and her complete certified records in hand when she went for her medical...they still told her she had to get a couple of shots. I'm going to send my husband with his cartilla ready to go but I'm expecting they may ignore it and give him a couple hundred dollars worth of injections anyway.

Business is good in Juarez it seems!!!

Too bad I didn't think of having him get some immunizations here, maybe a record certified by a US doctor is the golden ticket.

Just want you to know the people in this thread were dealing with getting a spousal visa, not a K-1. It is different for a K-1 since vaccinations are not required to enter the US with a K-1. They usually do not give any vaccinations to a K-1 applicant at the medical and give them a blank DS-3025 or none at all. My husband asked several times for them to look at his vaccination records, give him any missing shots and fill out the DS-3025 he would need for AOS. Even when offering to pay more for the service, he was refused. I just wanted you to be prepared for the fact that he may not be able to get vaccinations at his medical in Juarez and might not be given a useful copy of a properly completed DS-3025. In which case, you will need to find a civil surgeon in the US to transcribe his vaccinations onto an I-693 for AOS. You can do a search here on VJ for lots of info on that topic.

By the way, the required vaccinations for AOS are at least one in a series for MMR and Tdap/TD, varicella (unless he already had the chickenpox), and the flu shot(only during flu season Oct. - Mar.) http://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/ti/civil/vaccination-civil-technical-instructions.html#tbl1

Yes. I have heard of some K-1 applicants getting vaccinations in Juarez but the majority do not. It is not really a good thing to not be able to get them done and have them marked off on a properly filled out DS-3025. If you have all the required vaccinations at the time of the medical and have them marked off on the DS-3025 correctly, then there would be no need to see a civil surgeon in the US for an I-693. You could just send a copy of the DS-3025 with your AOS paperwork.

A new medical is not required when the K-1 medical is done within a year of filing for AOS but many civil surgeons will insist on giving a new one or charging for it anyway. It can be a pain to find a civil surgeon that will just do the vaccination transcription and not overcharge.

I wish they would give all K-1 applicants the required vaccinations at the time of the medical and provide a completed DS-3025 to use for AOS no matter what consulate you are interviewing at.
