Tony went to take his written driving exam on February 13th and passed!!! He then needed to schedule an appointment to take his actual driving test which was booked up until today ( February 27 ). So on Friday the 24th , the Tennessee Dept of Safety proclaimed a halt on issuing driving certificates until March 5th while an investigation takes place on Driving Certificates issued to immigrants. So now the next available date to test is on the 11th. Fortunately, he is able to drive on his UK license until then.

Well, on the upside it seems that they are finally waking up to the fact that there is something majorly wrong with the state lumping legal and illegal aliens all together into the same class with the CFD program. That always bothered me. If aliens legally present in the US are going to be able to get regular DL's going forward, than that's a huge step forward for the state of TN.

Was wondering how this would effect people seeking LPR. How long will Tony be able to drive on his UK license?

6 months after entry is the time normally allowed (at least in the states I've lived in so far).

Permanent Green Card Holder since 2006, considering citizenship application in the future.

That depends on what the outcome of this is:

The department will also work with legislators on a measure that would allow persons with legal presence to obtain regular driver licenses good for the length of their stay in the U.S.

Not that it's impossible that they will continue to lump those with pending I-485's in with the illegal crowd but one would hope that evidence of legal presence will be broader defined than a student or work visa.

I have a year on my UK licence in ME. Sucks for Tony; let's hope they can get it sorted out soon.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

He has one year on his UK license, but they recommended that he go ahead and get the Tennessee certificate. We want to get all of this paperwork started by the AOS interview (i.e. bank accounts, driving certificate, credit cards, etc. ) It seems as if everything that we attempt, we hit a roadblock. I guess that comes with immigration, but it is a bit frustrating.
