Actually Goldwater supported all versions of the civil rights bill except the last one. He opposed it because he was a libertarian and did not believe in the federal government forcing people to do business or engage in practices they did not want to engage in. He also opposed the Christian right and supported gay rights and abortion rights.

He opposed it on supposedly constitutional grounds. The Supreme Court upheld it. He was wrong.

Supreme court also passed Dred Scott does not mean they were right.

Good Lord. That decision was made more than 100 years prior to the Civil Rights Act. It was wrong and that wrong was eventually corrected. Goldwater admitted later - after the SCOTUS upheld the Civil Rights Act provisions he thought violated the Constitution - that in light of the SCOTUS decision, he was wrong on his stance. Dred Scott.

This Day in History: on this day in 1962, African-American James Meredith was blocked by state officials and violent mobs when he attempted to register for classes at the University of Mississippi, which was all white until that time. Meredith had previously obtained a federal court order to allow him to register; however, he was only able to enroll after the Kennedy administration sent in federal troops.

The mobs and politicians were Democrats. Same as in Alabama. You forgot to mention that.

Goldwater, a Republican. Wallace, a Democrat, continued to insist "Segregation FOREVER!" The people that blocked this man from attending college were Democrats. Democrats filibustered the voting rights act

The bill passed the Senate (77-19) before it passed the House (328-74). Those Senate Democrats sure didn't know how to filibuster. They should have asked today's Republicans.

And why was that? The whites in the south hated Lincoln. Some probably still do. So of course they joined the other political party. The big change came with Nixon's 'southern' strategy. With democrats everywhere else pushing for civil rights Nixon saw the chance and went for it. The switch from democrat to republican of the southern white racist vote succeeded in perpetuating the republicans at the time but may ultimately spell their demise. The south, once solidly democrat, most recently solid republican, and both due to racism, is finally starting to emerge from that. Obama is ahead in Florida and Virginia, is tied in NC. Georgia and SC are possibilities.

Not sure what a LINO is.

It means Libertarian in name only.

I'm voting for Gary Johnson to be different or writing Micky Mouse in.

However if it looks like Romney is going to win, I just might vote for Obummer.

That I knew, Paul. If Johnson only gets 1 vote, I would have guessed it was you. You are definitely not a LINO.

I think Lincoln had been out of office a few years before the civil rights act. To lazy to Google but pretty sure it was at least 10 years ...

Maybe they are Republican because they are tired of entitlement programs people sucking off the government teat . Maybe they are tired of pay high taxes and still having to work two jobs to send the kids to private school because the local public schools are cesspools. etc etc

The sad thing is, here we are in 2012 and although a good number of black men now are allowed on Campus, to few leave with a degree of any kind, how can we stop this racism and when will it end?
