What's your definition of success? Bilking people of their money? As much as you keep wanting to paint this as envy, it's about paying people what they are worth.

And what makes you qualified to think you know what ppl are worth?

An analogy would be a banquet and you (the CEO) have invited guests to join in the banquet asking that each person brings a casserole to the table. But before letting your guests eat, you and your family get your helpings first, filling your plates, including seconds and thirds. If nothing is left for the guests but bread crumbs would you call that banquet successful? Ebineezer Scrooge believed in that line of thinking.

How are you still alive with all this blood gushing out of your heart?

Open house time, ttyl guys B)

I'd call it being considerate and especially if I'm the host of that banquet, being hospitable. Perhaps you know of a different way for treating your guests?

got news for ya, life aint a banquet, and you're not the host.

I guess Charles Dickens had it all wrong.

If I didn't live in an area that wasn't built for the automobile that would be a viable option. Out here we have nothing but urban sprawl making it nearly impossible to survive without car. It's not just getting back and forth from work, paricularly when you have children (groceries, dr's appointments, etc.).

But wouldn't it be a more capitalist question to be asking why don't we as consumers have real choices with buying our gas? Where's the real competition for our patronage?

I do cycle, and my question is more, what's next when fossil fuels run out? Not simply a gripe about them making x billion dollars profit.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

OK, put better, when fossil fuels become so expensive that it's no longer viable? The econony, as we recognise it currently, runs because we have cheap sources of energy.

It's not going to happen overnight -- as fossil fuels become more and more expensive,

companies will start developing and using alternative sources of energy.

To quote GWB from another thread,

"And there is no doubt in my mind, not one doubt in my mind, that we will fail!" :P

I'll start explaining to my seven year old that he'll live to experience life like it used to be before the internal combustion engine then...

What alternatives? It's not just a matter of price...it is technological feasibility and the law of physics. There is nothing out there now to do what is currently done with fossil fuels. When the supply hits World Oil Peak and we head into the downhill slope of the graph...it is not going to be pretty. Increasing world populations and dwindling oil supply.

I would venture to say that most on VJ weren't born or were too young to remember the oil shocks of the 1970's. These were temporary and induced by embargoes/political turmoil. Memories of it are burned in my mind.

Any long term disruptions or shortages of oil supply to the USA would be devastating. The sprawling suburban life of America would grind to a halt and our economy would collapse. The foundation of the USA is built and maintained on cheap and plentiful fossil fuels. There is no siubstitute.

Dream on about a magic pill that will save the day when plentiful oil ends. Where is it?

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Ethanol (E85) - domestically produced from corn.

(GM already sells quite a few ethanol-powered vehicles.)

We will see more electric vehicles (Mitsubishi are going to sell one next year.)

Solar power.

Wind power.

Nuclear power.

Why not? We have nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers.

Nuclear power is particularly suitable for vessels which need to be at sea for long periods without refuelling.
