Occupy Wall Street marks 1st anniversary with marches, party hats

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Manhattan's financial district early Monday to mark the 1-year anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement -- choking traffic and crowding the area around the New York Stock Exchange but being met at most turns by walls of police who stopped them from occupying anything.

The crowds were far smaller than those that took part in the marches last year. Those protests quickly evolved into a 2-month-long occupation of Zuccotti Park in Manhattan and spawned similar Occupy protests across the nation. Further, this year, unlike a year earlier, commuters appeared unfazed by the crowds that began forming shortly after 7 a.m. on a plaza across the street from Zuccotti Park.

As marchers' attempts to get close to the Stock Exchange were foiled, they began breaking off into smaller groups and heading in different directions, playing a cat-and-mouse game with officers who quickly set up blockades at intersections in marchers' paths. Some protesters were seen being arrested, but there were no early signs of violence or clashes with police.

Critics say the Occupy movement has fizzled because it failed to adopt a political platform or get behind a particular candidate in this election year.

"I think they're idiots. They have no agenda," Robert Nicholson, who works on Wall Street, said Monday morning as he stood outside his office building watching a handful of protesters march by. "They have yet to come out with a policy statement, and now, who are they disrupting? People who are working, people who are trying to pay a mortgage or put their kids through school."

I am not the one sitting is his pop-up tent in the town square posting here on vj using an iPhone like the rest of the iSheeple thinking he is making a difference in the world.

Yes, god forbid young people care about something other than themselves. It's clear our political system is failing the majority of Americans. You would have to be pretty stupid not to have figured that out by now. Medium income levels have falling 9 of the past 12 years. Meanwhile productivity per average worker is way up. So my question is, where has all the increased wealth gone? And why are American workers no longer expected to gain from working harder?

Try working, and see what happens. Throwing a tantrum in the middle of the street just makes the real working people in this country laugh at your spoiled brat attitude.

Because they are not working harder. Productivity is up because of Technology . Thinks like Supply Chain Management, ERP systems, EDI, E- commerce, bar coding, Global Standards (Sorry did not mean to wig out you one world nuts). Anyway the wealth has gone global and to the people who have been smarter enough to leverage Technology.

There are some fields that are screaming for people.. Truck drivers are one. A decent driver can pull down 70K a year. Did you know a good mechanic at a place like Firestone, Tires Plus etc can make 75K a year. Problem is too many people want it handed to them or they go get a 4 year degree in History, which qualifies them for nothing.

It's a new world get on board or get left behind. College Degrees are not what they use to be. TECH TECH TECH. Skilled jobs, go to teh demand. Mr. Occupy I am sorry your degree in Socilogy from Berkley did not land you a 6 figure job and you are still living in moms basement. Shave, Bathe and go to work.
