On form DS156 they have a list of the questions that need to be answered in Engilish and Chinese and they also ask for "telegraph code for their Chinese surnames" They say this can be found at the post office but I would like to understand what it is so I can make sure my fiancee gets it.

Have you asked your fiancee about it? The packet instructions is also provided in Chinese. Please report back what she tells you.

I will be honest with you. I saw those numbers on my wife's DS-156 and didn't pay much attention to them. She filled out the form, and apparently understood and provided the correct information (as that we got the visas). For example, in Form DS-156, Box 6 - Surnames (as in passport), my wife included her surname in English <2 spaces>, followed by a Chinese character <2 spaces>, followed by a four-digit number; with a similar-formatted response provided in Box 7.

Ah, Google can be your friend.....here is one Wikipedia explanation found through a Google search..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_telegraph_code

Maybe other members can provide further insight?

Good luck on your visa journey.

telegraph codes are easy, as there is a look up table at each big post office, in a book.

send her to the biggest post office in her city, tell her to ask for the postal telegraph book, and she'll be able to cross-reference her name with the telegraph codes.

Good Luck !

Ya Ya Ya. The thing that bothered me is that the OLD DS-156 uses the telegraph codes, and I swear there is a new version of the DS-156 that DOES NOT USE the telegraphic codes.

Oh Well - forms is forms...

OK, I check with my fiance and she figured it out and understands so that's another problem down

This is the form with the bar code I was aking about and everyone here said it's not a problem but I see on the main section people are talking about trying to download this and having problems getting the bar code, everyone reccommends Safari??? The sample shows it with a bar code so I am still concerned about this.

Whem packet 4 arrives does the form come with it's own bar code? This is the last thing I'm still unsure of.

re: safari.

That's a web browser.

Yer probably trying to fill out a pdf 'fillable form' and

really - it's best to do it with adobe acrobat reader.

So, instead of trying to 'launch any pdf' within a browser,

download the pdf file instead, saving it to a file without opening it in 'the browser'

then

open it in adobe acrobat reader or foxit reader

then have another look, aye?
