I did DFC in 2005 when we moved to the US the first time; they really screwed things up removing that option for a lot of countries.

Since I have done both DCF and also gone through NVC I can personally vouch that the NVC sucks; complications after complications and the waiting times, our file was on someones desk sitting waiting to be closed out for a month! incompetence!.

Oh no! Thats terrible. Yes - everything I read about the NVC has been bad, so was really glad to bypass this part of the process. I wish you the best of luck!!

Got interview date tonight: Dec 13... going to try get earlier appt though.

When do you need to be in the US by? If I had stayed in Auckland after my interview, I would have got my passport (and visa) the next day (or so I was told). I flew out that afternoon back to Dunedin, and so had to wait for it to arrive to in the mail.

We need to be out of NZ by 13th Jan because that is when my wife's NZ work permit expires but we would like to be out of NZ and in the states for Christmas to spend it with her family.

If I can get the visa the next day after my interview and not have to wait for it to arrive at my house in Dunedin then we can fly out xmas eve :-)

Email the consulate and double check their time frame, but I'm sure if you stick around in Auckland, you should be able to pick your passport from the consulate as soon as the visa is printed. Will definitely save you a few days of waiting by the mail box...

Best of luck with everything. I'm sure you'll make to the US by Xmas :-)

Wonderful news! Not long at all.

I'll have my POE at San Fran too - please (not that it will be on your mind at all to update us haha) let us know how you get on there!

No problem - I'll definitely let you know how it was :)

Fingers crossed that it's relatively painless...

I'm sure San Fran has got to better than going through LA!

San Fran was our exit port in 2008; there is a nice relaxing rest area complete with awesome showers which is great if you have just come off long #### flight :-) I think its like $5-10 and they supply all the towels etc.
