I'd hazard a guess and say that *if* US consulates/embassies are forced to close in other countries, all immigration related issues would immediately stop and be put on indefinite hold until they get the situation under control. Usually there are only emergency staff left behind (if any).

Due to what I have been seeing on the news about what is happening in Africa and the Middle east, what happens if they close the embassies?

Visa operations will cease until the embassies are willing to allow people back inside....it would take too long to transfer some of those cases elsewhere without impacting another embassy, so more than likely they will just remain closed to visa operations until they are convinced it is safe (or until expatchiangmai 'orders' them back to work)

I just spoke to my senator's office regarding this issue, the only thing that ceases is the work in the particular embassy closed. If the embassies are closed, all cases will be transferred to other consulates and people will be notified as to which consulate your individual case is transferred to. When the embassy in Damascus was closed all of the cases were simply transferred to Amman.
