If you could somehow make the wealthiest Americans pay the extra tax on the gas that the lower income earners use, then you might have a plan.

How about slapping an extra tax on the sticker price of Escalades, Navigators, Hummers and the like....say like another 5 or 10 grand?

Sounds good - and I don't think anyone would notice. :D

Clearly. And what's worse is I went on the NJ turnpike the other day and after paying the toll fee had to steer a wide berth around a huge pothole. That's just insulting.

I thought each state is responsible for their roads.. You have to say, the price of fuel is cheap compared to nicely paved European roads. What is the price of fuel in France, Germany and the UK again?

I do agree that some roads in the US are disgraceful, especially roads in NY and NJ..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Gas costs about 70 cents more in California and the drive is much smoother. Surely whatever I "save" in gas goes directly towards paying for increased maintenance costs for my car.

Funny you should mention that because I saw a study which stated exactly that...

A proper gas tax would be at least $1.00..

So what? I should put up with shitty roads because I save money on filling up the tank?

$1 tax would be would be fine for me. $18 more per fill-up.. I am sure a $1 excise tax would help a lot of the nations roads...

Fair enough. But surely 'new' taxes to do the job of old taxes beg the simple question why the money you are paying for road repair is being spent on something else.

We've already had this debate with regard to the UK NHS. People responded positively to a poll that they would be prepared to pay a specific NHS tax for improving. Unfortunately they forget that this is what National Insurance was intended to do... I think its quite reasonable to wonder why I should pay additional taxes when the existing ones are not doing the job. In other words, as a taxpayer - am I getting good value for money?

*shrugs*

I'd have to quit my job and go on unemployment, or work some menial job that wouldn't satisfy the requirements for 125% of poverty level. It was getting to that point when gas was $3.20/gallon here. It's still a concern at $2.05/gallon, but not as much as it was.

One more period of cost increase to $3.00/gallon + a $1.00/gallon tax would send me into sub-poverty.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I'd just be happy if they would actually use the money they do collect on gas and road tax went towards fixing the dreadful condition of the roads. Had to replace a headlight a few weeks back because the roads in NJ are so uneven and pot-holed that the vibration broke the filament.
I agree, Detroit has the worst roads I have ever been on. There is no accountability on these taxes.

You haven't driven through NYC. They have potholes the size of Detroit.

I'll weigh in on this.

The sooner America gets its head out of the sand and breaks its addiction to millions of barrels of oil a day...the better off we will be in the long run.

Peak oil has been reached both domestically and from foreign supplies. We import more than half of our oil already. Continuing to build massive sprawling suburbs and plans to double immigration to push our country to 400+ million in another 40 years for Wall Street is national suicide. The era of cheap and plentiful oil is drawing to a close. Nobody wants to admit it though. America keeps on the same track as if it will never change.

There is no viable substitute for oil on the horizon and continuing to build our sprawling cities as if cheap plentiful oil will last forever is insanity. There also isn't a realistic long term energy strategy from the leadership in this country. They all hope they are out of office when the sh!t hits the fan.

Anyone that has lived through the oil shocks of the 1970's knows how precarious our country is. It ain't pretty and you ain't seen nothing yet. It's not if...but when it will happen.

If it takes a tax to wake up the masses...so be it.

tell dem peoplez not to buy gas guzzling vehicles.. lol, they crack me up.. the first to ###### and whine are the owners of big-### trucks, that aren't even needed for their intended use.. just for looks.. har har..
