I got approved for the permanent resident card (the 10 year one) sometime ego. I have the card now and have passed all the interviews but I am having problems. The company I work for is doing an I-9 audit and they want to see my green card. The problem is that I initially started working on this company illegally…. Having said this, I never wanted to do this, but my now wife insisted that I get in and work with her. She told me she could get me in because she knew the owner; and she did.

Well here is my problem now; I started working on that company at 2008 (while the owner was my wife’s friend), but my GC was not approved until 2009 (but I think I got a DHS in 2008). FYI, my wife’s friend the initial owner sold the company and the company got bought by a huge corporation several years ago. Also, my wife got fire some time ego and the only one that continues in the company it’s me. In contrast to my wife I got a huge raise and got promoted to director. I really wouldn’t like to leave the company for this. But I am afraid that somehow immigration could reopen my case and do something about my 10 years GC if they find about the mismatch through the I-9 audit.

My wife’s is telling that she thinks I will be ok because my case is closed and that ones you get the 10 years GC. she thinks Immigration can’t do anything to you. She could be right, but I have always felt uneasy about this, and now they have notice. I wanted to have someone’s input about this. thanks for the help..

Illegal working is forgiven when you get your greencard through marriage to a US citizen, so you need not worry about your greencard.

The company may still sack you for lying I suppose, that is up to them.

And did you supply fake documents to the company to begin work? If the SSNs or alien registration don't match up there could be an employment or tax fraud issue. None of this will get your GC taken away though.

I agree with Penguin you should be ok from immigrantion perspective but company can still fire you for lieing and that would be upto the new employer.

They might be ok too as you were legally working since they bought the company.

Thanks for the input, and yes, I got my GC through marriage. Initially my wife did supply then with a fake SSN. But before her friend sold the company he did change SSN in system with the real one. The problem is the mismatch now, but there is no record of the other SSN. Just FYI, I really feel uncomfortable about this situation. I don't like to do things like this, probably that’s why I am over thinking this. Thanks for the input.

About the company sacking me, I don’t think they would do that but everything is possible. I do system integrations for this company, and they are doing lots of acquisitions, if they sack me that would delay the system integration for new acquisitions for several months. they would sacking them self up to a point. I was more worried about the USCIS sacking me :)... Thanks for your input

Don't worry about it. you can not to show your GC to your employer , you can show your DL and your SScard, and you declare yourself as a permanent Resident and your provide your A#, in such a case your employer is not allowed, BY law, to ask you for the GC itself, for more information try to read the I9 instructions. your are in a good shape.

IF their social doesn't say "valid with DHS authorization only". If it does they need to either request a new one or show their GC.
