What role does the signing up for the selective service play in a man who is either granted permanent residency? conditional permanent residency? or is undergoing the AOS process?

I have no idea, but just wanted to give a word of warning: just make sure that in doing so, he is not in effect claiming to be a US citizen, as is the case when you register to vote.

The penalty for claiming that you are a US citizen when you are not is that you will be deported and never allowed to set foot into the country.

When a male immigrant between the ages of 18 to 26 applies to adjust status, they are automatically registering for the selective service. Which means, if there ever were to be a draft (highly unlikely) he may well could be drafted for a war. **edit** good gravy, lookit that sentence! I've been living in the south too long! **

Its got nothing to do with citizenship. Even illegals are required by law to register for selective service.
