What's your opinion about Arabic??

Okay, this is one heck of a thread. Reading all the pages made me laugh out loud, roll my eyes, feel sorry for someone, giggle, get annoyed, and throw my hands up in the air in exasperation all at once.

Z- for future information, you might want to learn the following:

Arab- generally used as a term to describe someone who is from an Arab country, or a county where the majority language is Arabic. Does not mean "Muslim," as there are Arab Jews, Arab athiests, Arab Christians, Arab athiests, etc. Does not necessarily indicate race (there are black arabs, white arabs, brown arabs, etc.)

Arabic- the language.

Arabian- the horse, or something that comes from the Arabian peninsula. In the same way that the word "Oriental" has become an impolite term for a person but okay for an object, it's the same for Arab and Arabian.

Muslim- someone who practices Islam.

etc.

They aren't technical definitions, but if you use them this way, it will generally create less confusion. :)

I won't disagree or something, I'm so tired and sleepy.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

seriously, i translated that sentence in Amazigh (berber), i did my best:

" do you know berber language? my husband is not berber, he doesn't speak berber, but i am in Ouarzazate 6 years, i knew berber language very well before, but i can't remember it "

Yep! I meant for it to say "Do you know Tachelheit? My husband isn't Amazigh (and doesn't speak Tachelheit) but I was in Ouarzazate for two years. I knew tachelheit before but now can't remember..."

To be fair, I couldn't remember if assugas was feminine or masculine, or how to make it plural (sin assugasen? snet assugas???). I should have just said 3mayn, but... you know.

I'm impressed you understood my botched Tachelheit with a botched translation, and I'm happy that I remember enough to get across a simple sentence like that, since I haven't had anyone to practice with for 3 years. It also cracks up a lot of Moroccans we meet that my Darija is fairly abysmal, but I can get by in Berber... and my husband doesn't understand a word of it!
