I am in NYC, and I just looked on the website and it says to get a license the bride and groom need SS#s, is there anyway around this as my fiance is from another country, and we will have to wait to apply for the SS#.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hey I had the same question, and I called and asked and they told me that if you don't have a SSN at the time you just don't write it in the box, but you are still eligible to marry in NYC and fill out the forms for a license

Read the guides, a person entering the country with a K-1 visa can get a SS number with out EAD, the Social Security department has a page on their site, just print the page out and brin it to the SSA office, just in case they want to give you a hard time.

(Ruling on SSA site)

This rule was put in place because getting EAD with in the 90 days of the K-1 can be impossible. So the first thing to do is get that SS number, some states require it in order to get the marriage license.

I had a quite different experience with the Social Security Administration. They didn't want to give my wife a number because she didn't have a green card at the time. When we went for her green card interview we explained the situation. She was issued a green card which was received in two weeks.

We returned to the SSA and then they didn't want to give her a number because her married named wasn't coming up in the Homeland Security computer. We finally convinced them that she had a valid green card and they went ahead and issued the card.

We are still having problems with Homeland Security. Even though my wife was issued a green card in her new married name, they never corrected the information in their computer. She can't even get an identity card because of this screw up.

Don't worry about the social security number for the license. If they insist, then put down "Applied For". That usually works.

Based upon our experiences with the whole Homeland Security thing, I'd say we are still very much screwed up and not any safer than 5 years ago.

Oh, by the way. Congratulations and good luck.
