i just want to seek an advice, my cousin is a permanent resident of US, she went back to the Philippines but she got pregnant, she needs to come back here because her re-entry permit will be due this coming november, my question is, does she will have a problem in the immigration here in US? does she needs to tell the airport security check that she is pregnant so that the baby will be safe from the x-ray scanner? does she needs a clearance stating that she's 3 months pregnant? pls, if you have an information about my inquiry, feel free to reply on this topic.. thank you guys and God bless us all...

I don't think she needs to disclose it anyone. From my experience of traveling with my pregnant wife a month ago, at all 4 airports we went through (in US and Europe) there was no problem of bypassing x-ray scanner when we asked for it.

The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) claims the potential for dangerous radiation exposure from the backscatter machine is low and that it doesn't pose a significant risk to pregnant passengers. The agency says each scan emits less than 1/1,000 of the radiation given off in a standard chest X-ray, or the equivalent of two minutes of high-altitude flight.

But some medical experts have questioned whether the machines have been tested thoroughly enough and they're worried about what would happen if a machine malfunctioned. If you have safety concerns or feel uncomfortable being scanned, the TSA insists that you can opt for a physical "pat down" search instead. You can find out more about the machines (known as Advanced Imaging Technology) on the TSA website.

So you're worried about immigration problem rather than health of the baby ? Don't you think that is just plain stupid and irresponsible (regardless of whether x-ray scanner are or are not dangerous) ?

Crossing border as pregnant is not an issue immigration wise.

If she is asked to go through the x-ray machine, she should say that she is pregnant and wishes to have a personal 'pat down' instead by a female agent. They will have no problem obliging and that way she won't have to worry about potential damage to her baby. If she wishes, she could have some sort of letter from a doctor verifying her pregnancy but I doubt she would need it.

Regarding her re-entry permit, they may wish to know what her intentions are and why she is out of the US for long enough to need a re-entry permit. Has she 'moved' back to the Philippines to live, or has she been there temporarily on a long visit instead? She may or may not have problems returning to the US. It really will depend on her personal circumstances and how the border official chooses to handle her re-entry.

Ya, tell the goons at border patrol to give a pat down, no xray.

You can tell them WHY, if you want - but it's enough to go for pat down, by request.

Now, my wife's 2nd cousin, twice removed' nephew had a similar problem with the re-entry permit, and what my uncle's niece told him was , "Uncle Darnell Say make certain the IV Unit know you exist before you get on the plane".

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
