Hello. I am a little unclear on whether or not we need to get a police certificate. My fiance lived in another country for 8 months. That was about 5 years ago. Some of the paperwork that I read says to get a police certificate if you live in another country for 6 months and some paperwork says to get one after a year? Can you tell me which one is accurate.

Thank you

Good morning!

Yes, your fiance, in theory, will have to obtain a Police Certificate from that other Country she lived at for 8 months. I say in theory because that information is provided by the DOS website here http://travel.state....195.html#police; however, I just happened to open Packet 3 from Argentina, and it says:

In addition, applicants need to present a police clearance certificate from each country in which they have lived outside of Argentina for more than one year since reaching the age of sixteen. For more information on obtaining police certificates from other countries, see: http://www.travel.st.../fees_3272.html

*Police certificates from countries in which you formerly resided and have not returned to, since the police certificate was issued, are valid indefinitely.

You are not required to obtain a police certificate from the U.S.

So now, I'm wondering if it's a Country specific requirement.

I suggest 3 things:

1 - Click on the Latvia flag underneath your name and reach out to other VJ members from Latvia that can give you specifics on what the Embassy requests for Police Certificates

2 - If you are unable to reach anyone that can give you consulate specific information, email the Embassy and inquire

3 - If suggestions 1 & 2 didn't work. Try to obtain the Police Certificate from that other place, just in case

From Polish embassy:

"All applicants aged 16 years or over must submit a police certificate from their current country of residence and/or nationality if they have lived there for six months or more. Police certificates are also required from all other countries where the applicant has resided for at least one year. A police certificate must also be obtained from the police authorities of any place where the applicant has been arrested for any reason, regardless of how long he or she lived there."

From USA Travel State:

"Police certificates from your present country of residence and all countries where you have lived for 6 months or more since age 16 (Police certificates are also required for accompanying children age 16 or older)"

I wrote an email to my embassy asking about police certification and they sent me this: http://poland.usembassy.gov/poland/police_certificates.html

I would advice you to get certification from all all countries that u stayed for more than 6 months, just in case they ask for it.
