A standard pasport and renewal is actually quite cheap in Nigeria.

800 to 1000 is not cheap but I guess I the nigerian website is wrong on the cost. So maybe she should send 5000 dollars to her husband to make sure he get this expensive passport corrected.

I have seen some of the dodgy Nigerians that have a fist full of old passports that they used to try to travel with. With the state of records what they were it wasn't hard to use an affidavit of birth to get several in different names. The thought was if Joe Blow wasn't able to get a visa maybe Steve Smart could. I remember a case here years back that resulted in a denial because fingerprints at the embassy linked the person to another passport and another name. We all pay the pricw for the stupid actions of a few.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Who is scamming who? Whatever amount let your husband bear the cost since he's working. I don't believe the first money you sent him was lost to someone else but he himself... Wise up young lady or you're being used... That being said, $800 dollars for anything passport must be "fraudlent concept" to drain you. For example, your husband is not a foreigner and he understand the nigerian system, therefore, he should always protect you from such misgiving assuming the great love he has for you. I hope and pray I am wrong in my opinion... Wishing you all the best

Thank you for your input on the amount of the passport but I never said I sent him any money the first time the expense of the passport and the medical and the police report he is paying I paid the things on this side. The money that he has lost was his money and he never asked me to replace it either. There really is no need for him to scam me since if he needed money all he would have to say is honey I need money and I would send it because he is my husband. Again thank you for your input but becareful on making assumptions about someone because of where they come from before you have the facts.

according to the website, they dont do correction, you will have to pay for a renew. Don't let anyone scam you for your hard earn money.

You are correct I called the Nigerian Embassy here in the states and they said they do not correct he needs to apply for a new one. He can apply on line and will get an appointment I think they said to go to Abuja then he will bring the old passport and the proof he needs to show why it needed to be done and it will be $65 for the passport and $30 for processing he is doing it tomorrow and very happy his so called friend was wrong.

I am going by Onyeuwa oma assumption....Scam...Scam...Scam....even being in love...you still need to use your common sense...there is no way immigration will charge even 300 dollar for what...i will not accuse your man but if he is not part of the game to swindle you...he is being swindle...and if there is any way to investigate his claim you have to do it right away...and determine who is fooling who...because that is ridiculous to Nigeria government immigration agency...do not give the money...tell him to figure it out and be a man and get maybe a new passport....maybe i am being too strict but we are just tired of Nigerian name being paint black from inside...If your man is part of this game...that is really a redflag to me about his intention in this relationship...sorry to all who may think that i am judgmental on this but i've learn a lot from other people experience. They always cause more heart break when they are here than their act of systematically using every means to cause the foreign partner to send money...money does not grow on tree here..does it? Just be careful in all you are doing in the name of relationship.

I will say to you the same I said to others where did you see I was the one that gave him money the money for his passport is his own money that he works very hard every day for if you would scam your spouse that is your behavior. But I dont see how asking a husband or a wife for money if he did would be a scam we are married and if he needs something I will help him and if I need something he will help me. We are in this together to get together not to count pennies or worry who spent the most on this process. I know I will have to because I am the one that has to travel. But you are assuming something and not even reading what I said and adding to it something you want to see not what was there.

Being from a place does not mean you know all the nuances of that place. In Nigeria, the moment someone learns that you are married to an American all the rules/costs change drastically. All of a sudden, "friends" know more about the visa process than you and have an abundance of misinformation to pass along as though it's gospel. Before we got married and were just looking at doing a vistor's visa my husband went to see a "travel agent" who told him the visa could be approved if he showed he had travelled outside of Nigeria and went back...NOT! "Let your husband bear the cost since he's working." Memlaura is doing what she can as a wife to help their journey move along and I'm sure her husband is doing the same. The cost of marriage is bearing it together. $300 in Naira is no small amount to come by.

It is always best for our Nigerian spouses to go inquire from themselves. If he were trying to scam. He would have told her it was $800 and no conversation about what his friend told him.

(Have fun on your trip!)

Thank you as always for your support and I cant wait the count down is on.. Less than 2 weeks and the reason he tells me the things he is told is because he knows I live on this site and I will find out what is true and how to do things he is not rich either but he is trying so hard anyway thanks again...

Listen and Listen well. I had to make corrections on my e-passport just this last May 2012 because of a silly mistake an immigration officer did on my passport. instead of inputting 16 on my birthdate, he inputted 06. in short . I had to travel to Abuja for a reissue. it cost me close to 45 thousand naira. I am not trying to scare you. l currently stay in Nigeria and what i am telling you in the real truth. you might be able to haggle and bargain for something less but I am ####### sure it can never be less than 20k Naira and your spouse must be ready to submit the old one with evidences to prove that the error is not a fault of his. it is not like the bussiness as usual thing again. i hope I have not scared you in anyway. Have a great Day.

No that did not scare me and he knows he will have to stay there. I had to pay to get my name changed on my passport here and that was $170 just for that and then extra to expidite so I was expecting that he would have to pay 200 or 300 there and that was what he and I had talked about and he was ready for that and he was ready for the bus trip and the stay but not the being told it will be 800 just for the passport that took him for a shock and he wanted me to find out the truth. That is why I posted here.

Even if he can get it done, $800 is cheaper than the $875 that we paid and she had to go to Abuja.

Is it right, is it proper, was I scammed? The answer is an individual choice but I just want to get my baby out of there so that we can get on with our lives. I consider it as part of the total cost of immigration. 50 years from now when yah all are rocking on the porch watching the Grand kids play, will you remember that money? Focus on the long term goal.

Additionally, don't get discouraged by those that are confusing renewals/reissues with corrections. They are different animals and the cost varies.

IMHO, the important thing is not the money (deduct that from your Fiance side of the monthly hobby spending), but to make sure that this is only a one time deal and that he gets a genuine passport.

One more thing, be wary of advice on the web, including mine. Even though most mean well and their posts may come from a well meaning place, but remember that there is a preset suspicion on Nigerians at large, especially on VJ.

Good luck to you Guys and please tell him to be careful on the trip to Abuja. I was more frantic about the dangers of the trip more than the money actually.

Thank Gowan I am very nervious about his trip to Abuja. He was suppose to go with his best friend a couple weeks ago but he couldnt go then so his friend went without him but I worry every time he mentions going there. I will tell him to be careful double and your right money can be re earned I only have one husband and he is who I want to spend my life with so if it is $800 we will come up with it some how so he can be here but from what they told me at the embassy he will only have to pay 95 dollars total and turn in old passport and proof of why it needs to be changed.,

Oga na wetin now? 5,000 ko, 10,000 ni. If you read my post again, I said standard, not renewal or reissue.

I am rooting for him. Please keep us posted. I've heard this before too but never had it confirmed. If this is true then we will be abel to guide future 9ja members. Using wrong date of birth, intentionally, is very common in Nigeria.

Please if you need to do something in Nigeria, the official price is always quoted but you can be very sure you will not get that document maybe untill the officer in charge of that process has a change of heart or realises that he has punished you enough for your stupidty(for trying to be a law abiding citizen) which may span up to six months or more and the officer will continue to hide either behind the excuse of no stationary to do the job or stock is exhausted. wise up and follow the route that will get you what you want in a time span that will make it useful or else. you will be on your own.

I understand very well what you mean and we expected that to a point. Thank you everyone once we get this accomplished I will let everyone know exactly how much it cost and for what. Including his travel and how long it took but 6 months is not acceptable lol as if I can control government... But in 6 days I am with my baby for 2 weeks and that is all I care about right now.... One day at a time (L):)
